We really think you'll be happiest spending most of your time at the lake, just taking in the nature and quiet. However, we compiled a list of places we have found enjoyable and charming. We also enjoy taking sunset drives after dinner, randomly in the area.

Small town about 20 minutes away has a Hannaford Grocery and a couple of hardware stores and other basics. This is our go-to for grocery shopping when we don't want to go into Augusta. Winthrop is a small town and Augusta has all the big places like Home Depot etc. Audette's Hardware in Winthrop is a real Maine experience.

Our family always enjoys a visit to this special old department store in Gardiner. 25 minutes from the cabin. They have all kinds of useful things. Good place to stop to pick up a gift to take home to someone. You drive through Hallowell to get there.

Just a few miles away from the cabin. Go there for some treats. They also have some prepared things in their fridge like soups and casseroles, besides baked goods. Pretty view of the valley around our cabin.

We used to walk here as children from the cabin. What a treat to get penny candy at that time. Just a half mile from our cabin. It's a little modernized but still so historical and a thriving business. Gas pumps work.

We like to go here just to experience the truly rocky Maine coast. Spend maybe and hour and a half here. Huge rock formations and a lighthouse and a little café. It takes an hour and a half to drive there from our cabin. It's a chance to see the small towns of Maine on the way.

We like to go here just to experience the truly rocky Maine coast. Spend maybe and hour and a half here. Huge rock formations and a lighthouse and a little café. It takes an hour and a half to drive there from our cabin. It's a chance to see the small towns of Maine on the way.

Up near Canada, so you need to allow a whole day to go up and back. We drove there to look for moose in the wild. We saw a few walking along the road.

It's a for real working shipyard area with a nice walking path. We like it because it's not just made for tourists. Also there's a nice footbridge across the water. 63 miles from the cabin.

Nice place to take a hike up a hill with a fire tower, from which you can see surrounding area. Within 30 minutes of our cabin.

This is a wonderful rescue sanctuary. About an hour from our cabin. On the way to Portland. Sprawling well-cared-for grounds and many interesting animals, all from Maine.

We enjoyed this place on it's patio with bright blue umbrellas and it has inside dining too. It's a college town with plenty of other restaurants and shops. 40 minutes from our cabin. Full dinner menu.

Outstanding views of the harbor. One hour from our cabin. Fun indoor/outdoor casual family atmosphere. You can see boats working. Roads are highway and also winding roads in rural area. It's not far from the town of Brunswick, and this tiny area is called Harpswell.

Country store in Readfield, just next to their post office on Rt. 17. We found their hot sandwiches to be delicious! Other basic supplies are there. 10 minutes from the cabin.
