The Museum Mayer van den Bergh evolved from a private museum into the municipal museum it is today. It is still the gem it once was. Museum Mayer van den Bergh is built around the collection of one man, and that is still its essence, its strength and its attraction. Even so, in the course of more than a century, a lot has changed, behind the scenes as well. The Museum Mayer van den Bergh was the first museum in the world to be built around a single collection – with a special focus on Bruegel.

The Fashion Museum is sheltered  in the ModeNatie in the Nationalestraat. ModeNatie accommodates several partners: the Fashion Museum, the Flanders Fashion Institute and the Fashion Department of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts, Artesis Hogeschool Antwerpen. From the beginning the MoMu has opted for a dynamic approach that exceeds the static character of the average museum. No fixed arrangement of the own collection but varying thematic exhibitions on one specific designer or a fashion-related subject, that show a selection of pieces from the collection alongside pieces on loan.

Peter Paul Rubens was a famous Flemish painter with an extravagant Baroque style. Rubenshuis is his former home and studio, and has since been converted into a museum. The Rubenianum is in a building at the back of the garden, a centre dedicated to the study of his works. The house is vast, with a courtyard, patio, an art room where Rubens housed his collection, and a studio workspace where Rubens created most of his art.

The Vleeshuis is a five hundred year old guild hall in the Gothic style. Vleehuis used to house the Butcher’s guild, and acted as a central meat market. Unusually, the current museum has nothing to do with the building’s history, instead being a collection of musical instruments. Detailing the story of minstrels, and choirs up to more modern concerts and dance, it pays for the entrance fee in sheer novelty alone, with the Aida trumpets and antique instruments being of particular note.

This contemporary art museum is the ideal place to visit on a sunny day. The open-air museum is populated by over 200 sculptures across 30 hectares of park. At the centre of this park sits Middelheim Castle, a renovated mansion which now includes a reception, a café, and a museum shop. The Braem Pavilion is a small, covered area within the park where fragile works are displayed, so be sure not to miss it. The rotation of works changes twice a year, making it ideal for repeat visits

The museum is located to the left of the terminal entrance at the airport. it is quite a small museum with just two members of staff when I visited. The museum exhibits cover WW1, WW2 and the history of Stampe. Most of the aircraft on display are WW1 replica aircraft in the main hall, a few Stampe bi-planes and the Magister jet trainer. There is also a diorama of a downed V1 bomb and a lot of uniforms on display. Unfortunately the large number of Stampes and the T6 Harvard are in a hangar which you cannot enter and only view from a raised balcony window. The displays are interesting, particularly the large number of models on display and the WW2 history located upstairs. Impressive !!

The maiden house fits in with the other 16th/17th century museums in Antwerp. However, while the other museums mostly focus on paintings or printed books, here the history of the maiden house itself takes center stage. The building is not as nicely decorated as the other museums, since the orphans were probably raised in modest circumstances. Nevertheless, the chapel is quite nice to see, with some huge paintings that give an impression of what life here may have been like. To me another highlight are the 16th century and other old documents. The inner court is also quite nice. I think they should be able to elaborate more on the history of the building...

An open-air museums so many buildingd, churches and private properties there are ! Leuven is home to one of the oldest European universities, founded in 1425. Now a vibrant student city, the university and the town are almost synonymous as faculties are spread throughout, functioning as one large campus. At its center is the library, established in 1636 and having been heavily affected by the two world wars, now stands restored to its neo-Renaissance style. A sculpture by controversial artist Jan Fabre of a beetle stuck at the tip of a steel needle stands directly in front of the library posing a juxtaposition between the style of the library and the contemporary artwork.

Mons was the European Capital of Culture for 2015. One of its main exhibitions, Van Gogh in the Borinage featured the early works of the artist at the moment when he decided to change careers from preacher to painter. The works depict scenes from the coal-mining area of the Borinage, near Mons. As its names suggests, Mons is a hilly town and is rather quiet except for its accents of vibrant cultural life. Besides the changing program of exhibitions and events, you can feast your eyes on the recently built convention center designed by the renowned architect Daniel Libeskind.

Serving as the setting for some of the worst battles between the Germans and the Allied forces during World War I, Ypres is a rural town with a huge history that can still be seen in its landscape today. While there, you can visit the Flanders Fields museum and a great number of WWI sites and cemeteries on foot or by bike. Historically, Ypres played a major part in the textile industry during the middle ages and even had a market for its textiles in Russia. Lier is situated in the province of Antwerp. It’s a rather quiet town of almost 35,000 inhabitants, yet there’s quite a lot to see. Maybe surprisingly, Lier has two UNESCO World Heritage Sites, both of which are absolutely stunning. Attached to the town hall, the medieval belfry occupies the center of the pretty town square and is where the visitor center is housed. The second world heritage site is Lier’s historic beguinage, a tranquil and peaceful oasis of cobblestone streets, white row houses, lawns, trees and ponds. This is a great city for a day trip – it is bisected by a calm river, its banks lined with downright gorgeous buildings, and dotted with historic structures !

Le Toison d'Or Building ! Nestled between two historic gates, Porte de Namur and Place Louise, Le Toison d’Or is a contemporary reinterpretation of the Art Nouveau Style that stands out and creates a sophisticated atmosphere in Brussels. Devised as a hybridization of a traditional building block typology and a mixed use development with podium, it simultaneously merges a retail and residential program. The design is elegant with a unique facade — visually fragmented through variations in texture, depth and rhythm, and organic forms of the V-shaped portals which represent the link between the lower retail levels and the residential levels above. The Black Pearl Building ! Situated in the European Quarter, the Black Pearl is a complex of about 11,000 m² that meets the highest architectural, technical and environmental requirements. The design of the building is simple and clear, with smooth concrete facings and lavish glazed drape walls outlined with steel details. It has underground parking with a terminal to recharge electric cars and a central garden that is a bit of a green oasis. In 2012, the Brussels Institute for the Environment (BIM) awarded it with the ‘Exemplary Building’ label.

"Leopold Village"... Located just a few strides from the beautiful Leopold Park, Leopold Village is a true multi-functional architectural landmark of the European Quarter. The complex has three residential blocks with luxury units — studios, apartments and penthouses, a four star hotel, underground parking, and on the ground and first floor there are commercial spaces, restaurants and shops. The design is lofty and dynamic with several unique facades, big windows and an interesting volume play with a hint of 50s and 60s aesthetics.

The French-speaking Brussels Parliament ! The French-speaking Parliament represents the combination of the past and present, history and modernity. The project is a construction of a new building and restoration of a building that has heritage value. This is a clean, functional and eco-friendly building with a simple and bright form. The most striking part is the facade which adds an aesthetic richness to the building. It’s envisaged by a ‘voronoïdes’ pattern — a mathematical formula based on five distinct elements that combines infinite mathematical variations to create a remarkable aesthetic.

Square Brussels Meeting Centre is an alluring technological gem in the heart of the Quartier des Arts that gives a newfound visibility to the former ‘Palais des Congrès’. It represents a poetic emblem incarnate in the 16-metre tall glass cube that forms the principal entry to the premises. The design is transparent and light; it’s bold and modern but at the same time it appears to blend into the surrounding architectural landscape. It offers 27 meeting rooms, an exposition zone, restaurant, and a brasserie. The foyer of the meeting center is decorated with prestigious works of art which create an ambiance specific to the site — a mix of history and future.

Hôtel Tassel is widely considered the world’s first Art Nouveau building. Built by architect Victor Horta in 1893, the UNESCO World Heritage house (which, contrary to the name, isn’t a hotel) was designed as a home for Belgian scientist and professor Emile Tassel. The building features a trendsetting design that abandoned the traditions of the time for modern materials like iron and glass. A distinctive stone exterior with large curved bay windows encases a stunning interior, the centrepiece of which is a grand staircase that spirals up through the tall townhouse. While visitors can’t freely venture inside, it’s worth passing by to see the building’s striking exterior.

The imposing, square 26 metre-tall tower was built around the year 1100, while the nave was rebuilt in 1712. The coats of arms representing the salmon of Salm above the doorway were hammered and made almost indecipherable by the French revolutionaries at the and of the 18th century. The external gallery is supported by three beams adorned with grimacing faces. From the top of this gallery, relics brought back from the Crusades were presented to pilgrims. Inside, the Baroque oak furniture is the work of the sculptor Jean-Georges Scholtus of Bastogne.

The National Cycling Museum ! A must for any cycling freak who comes to Belgium. It's not very big, but really worth a visit. On the ground floor they have a permanent collection about the history of cycling and bicycles (which is also quite interesting for the non-freaks) and upstairs there's always a changing collection (e.g. the history of the world championships cyclo-cross, history of 20 years the team Flandria,...). There's a very big chance also you'll meet Freddy Maertens, two times world champion, because he works there.

The Belfry of Bruges is a medieval bell tower that sits in Market Square, and it is listed as one of the top things to do in Bruges. It’s 366 steps to reach the top and once you do you’ll be rewarded with panoramic views of the city. The funny part is trying to take a symmetrical photo of the tower once you’re back on solid ground because the tower is actually tilted a whole meter to the east.

This one’s a bit unusual, but the main attraction in the Basilica of the Holy Blood is, well, Holy Blood. Inside the church you’ll find a phial made of rock crystal filled with blood that was brought to the city by Thierry of Alsace after the 12th century Second Crusade. This phial is believed to contain the blood of Jesus Christ and it’s brought out to be worshipped by believers every day.

The Crowne Plaza Hotel sits in a pretty pristine location and in its basement you’ll find the old foundations of St. Donatian’s Church, which was built in 950 AD to house the relics of Saint Donatian, but later became a cathedral in the 16th century. It’s one of those unknown things to do in Bruges and most tourists don’t hear about it, but if you go inside the hotel and ask at the reception desk,  you should be able to go down there for a peek!

The city’s Begijnhof, (Wijngaardstraat, Bruges) a garden complex home to manicured lawns, traditional houses, and a Benedictine convent, dates back to the 13th century, when it was used as a religious place of residence for single women who worked for the church but weren’t nuns. Today, the complex offers unprecedented peace and quiet in the heart of the city, where you can learn all about the practices of the begijnhof from the nuns who still call it home.

On the eastern side of Sint-Baafsplein stands the Cathedral of St. Bavo, a majestic building of brick and granite with a Romanesque crypt of its predecessor, Sint-Jans church. Charles V gave the cathedral its present name after he destroyed the old one to build a fortress. The High Gothic cathedral choir dates from the 13th century, while the late Gothic tower and the main nave were built during the 15th and 16th centuries. The light interior of the cathedral is richly decorated with some unique paintings.

Ghent is a little rebel. People from Ghent are called rope (or: noose) bearers as they seriously rebelled against the regime of the Roman Emperor and Spanish King Charles (Karel) V back in 1539. Charles won and humiliated the people of Ghent by having them parade around town with white undershirts and ropes around their neck.  If you stroll the area around Prinsenhof you will find the famous statue remembering this humiliation. There are even restaurants and bars named after this and I am sure you will find more (hidden) references!

Werregarrenstraat, or Graffiti Street, was set up by Ghent city council to combat the problem of graffiti in the city. Anyone can come here with a spray can and paint whatever they like upon the walls. The result is an organic work of art that changes in tome and colour day to day. You can buy a can of spray paint and try it out for yourself for free. Waterloo is the perfect place for history lovers who want to see for themselves where the famous 1815 Battle of Waterloo took place, forever changing the course of European history. The major sights of interest there are the Lion’s Mound, the big and impressive panoramic painting together with the visitors’ center where it is possible to watch extracts from movies. Besides visiting the battlefield and the surrounding attractions, visitors can also explore the magnificent 1,000-year-old Abbey.

Ath is most famous as the home of giants because of the ‘Ducasse’ festivities which happen every summer. On the fourth weekend of August, gigantic figures representing Samson, Goliath and a couple of other allegoric figures parade through Ath’s street, and a reenactment of the wedding of Goliath and the fight with David are performed. The town is also home to a beautiful 12th century tower, a 17th century town hall and stunning Gothic-style churches.

The Procession of the Holy Blood ... Each year, forty days after the Easter holiday, the largest procession in the city of Bruges, Belgium takes to the streets to parade around a vial of what is said to be the blood of Jesus Christ so that it might once again become liquid for a time. It is also known as the “Most Beautiful Day in Bruges,” has been taking place each year since the 13th century when the relic is said to have come to the city.

A narrow gauge Delight...For all rail/steam enthusiasts this little narrow gauge line is a unique one off in my experience, truly Belgian, and one of only 4 preserved rail facilities in Belgium I am told. Run by Volunteers it is a sheer delight to travel in the open windowed coaches from the old (now closed ) rail station in Rebecq (with car parking & availability for coaches to stay also) opposite the platform whence the little train departs. Dimanches it is an unusual experience as the lineside greenery enhances a rural tranquillity until the end of the line where the train reverses to the intermediate station where the locomotive runs around the train...

On the bustling bazaarlike rue Malibran between place Blyckaerts and place Flagey, petite rue Malibran might catch your sight, but hardly your attention. Appearances can be deceiving: a slightly uphill street seemingly going nowhere. A cul-de-sac with no reason to venture further. But go beyond first impressions and the surprise begins just where the road seems to come to an end. The street bends down left and right leading to a tiny playground, some stones and benches to sit on and you can stay here for hours soaking in a sleepy village atmosphere.

Leave the fuss of shoppers and tourists in the city center and step away from the traffic of Brussels’ small ring to a more peaceful part of town. The Canal area is poised to become the new up-and-coming, trendy neighborhood in the years to come. But for now it makes for a relaxed, lazy walk along the Senne. Colored pinwheels and urban art discontinuously dot the canal. The northern side has a distinct post-industrial attire, but gets greener closer to Tour & Taxis. The route gets busy in some parts, but is worth it for the pockets of peace you’ll encounter along this still relatively unassuming part of Brussels, for as long as it lasts.

Voted one of Flanders’ most beautiful villages, the town of De Haan is one of the Belgian coastline’s most scenic spots. While parts of De Haan date back to the Middle Ages, much of the town today was formed when King Leopold II commissioned the construction of the resort town in the late 19th century. De Haan’s meandering streets are filled with beautiful Belle Époque buildings and the town was once home to Albert Einstein who lived there for a number of months before emigrating to the USA.

A pastoral idyll on the banks of the River Lomme, Rochefort is a medieval town that has retained much of its beauty and charm, despite being the site of frequent conflicts, notably during the French Revolution and Second World War. Rochefort’s Rue de Behogne is the main hive of activity in town and leads up to the ruins of Chateau Comtal, a medieval hilltop castle. Its beech forest is one of its many riches. Below the village several shale quarries that were once well mined have created cavities that are still visible today. Tobacco cultivation has also left behind a few drying sheds that were originally agricultural hangars. There is also a magnificent fortified farm from the 17th century, as well as a laundry building from 1865 close to a circular drinking trough in the centre of the village. Slate houses surround the area.

Gravensteen is one of the strongest moated fortresses in Western Europe, surrounded by the River Lieve. It was built between 1180 and 1200 on the orders of Philip of Alsace, the former count of Flanders, on the foundation of an earlier 9th-century structure and was created in the style of Syrian crusader castles. Today, it remains a unique example of the European medieval art of fortification.

On the west side of Sint-Baafsplein stands the 91-meter-high belfry, symbol of the city's independence, where the charters of the privileges of Ghent were kept. The tower was begun about 1300 and by 1338, it was mainly completed. The present-day spire was restored to its original 14th-century form at the beginning of this century and replaced the wooden bell tower of 1380. It is crowned by a gilded copper dragon, which was first installed in 1377. Today, it is a replica as are the four armed figures at the corners of the platform.

Immaculately restored in 1962, this former children's hospital - founded in 1363 - is one of Belgium's last remaining Godshuizen. These houses were founded by well-off families for the needy. In a picturesque courtyard are 18 typical Flemish cottages, all interconnected and now housing the extremely comprehensive Museum voor Volkskunde, which with its notable collection of equipment, documents, and everyday objects provides a vivid picture of Flemish folk life around 1900. Of particular interest are the restored workshops and living rooms, a dining room, a barber's shop, a cobbler's workshop, an apothecary's shop, a confectioner's bakery, and a candlestick maker's workshop.

In the east part of the city, across the Slachthuisbrug over the Leie Canal, are the ruins of Sint-Baafsabdij, an abbey founded in 630 by St. Amandus and rebuilt after being destroyed by the Normans in the 10th century. This rustic restaurant lies hidden away down a quiet cobbled lane in Uccle commune, south of the city centre. Too hidden, it turns out, for our taxi driver, who ends up hopelessly lost. Most of the people who eat here are locals who come on foot, so the place is still something of a secret. You can dine in the nostalgic bistro interior or outside on the terrace when the weather allows. The €30 menu is fantastic value for Brussels, although you might have to factor in an astronomical taxi fare.

Tucked away down a side street near the flea market, this rambling restaurant is decorated with a bewildering collection of old biscuit tins and coffee grinders. A bit cluttered, perhaps, but the decor fits in well with the grungy antique shops in the neighbourhood. The kitchen produces inventive dishes cooked in Belgian beers, such as scallops simmered in Watou’s Wit from Brouwerij Van Eecke. The long beer list includes hard-to-find local brews: Jambe-de-Bois from Brasserie de la Senne and the stubbornly sour Cantillon for any customers up for a taste challenge.

Most Brussels restaurants are quiet places compared to London or New York. Anything more than a whisper is considered vulgar. But diners at Toucan can raise the roof beams on a busy Friday night, when the kitchen staff put together huge platters of fresh seafood, including sublime oysters from the Atlantic coast and little grey shrimps scooped from the North Sea. The white walls and plain wood furniture add to the maritime mood.

Among Belgium’s eastern countryside, where the low hills are rolling and cows and sheep are grazing, where even a wild deer or two can be spotted, is the town of Herve. Everything is home made, with lots of love and expertise: ice cream, cakes, sauces, croquettes, etc. We prefer seasonal products (fruits and vegetables). Authentic local Belgian wine tasting ! A must ! Belgium’s southernmost town Torgny is located in Gaume and thus enjoys a much warmer climate than the country’s northern reaches. The picturesque village is widely considered one of the most beautiful towns in Wallonia, and its location on the banks of the charming Chiers River, as well as its winding streets and pretty houses topped with Roman tiles make it a romantic destination.

In 1937, the architect F Van Ruyskensvelde converted the ground floor into an Art Deco-style cocktail bar with an ocean-liner-style mezzanine and chrome panelling. In 1953, the bar was taken over by the pianist Stan Brenders who made "L'Archiduc" a famous venue for Belgian jazz. Today, the original décor and Brenders' piano lend a period air to the cocktails and "jazz after shopping" concerts.

La Porteuse d'Eau ! A beautiful café on two floors with stained glass windows and a spiral staircase. It occupies an Art Nouveau building designed by Ernest Blérot, whose signature is carved on a stone to the right of the entrance. The same architect designed all the houses running along the north side of nearby Rue Vanderschrick, as well as several in Avenue Jean Volders. But the interior of La Porteuse d’Eau, although it looks Art Nouveau, is a modern replica.

Another unique thing to do in Bruges is to attend one of the free harp concerts by local harpist Luc Vanlaere. These are held in Site Oud Sint Jan, which is located on Mariastraat 38 right across from Our Lady Church. The concerts take place Tuesday to Saturday at 3 pm, 5 pm, and 6.30 pm, with each session lasting 40 minutes.
