Galloway has the unique benefit of a range of magnificent hills, set around and within the vast Galloway Forest Park, the largest in Britain with 300 square miles of forest, moorland, lochs and peaks. Combined with rolling farmland and over 200 miles of coastline, the opportunities for healthy, natural, outdoor activities are almost limitless. Newton Stewart sits at the geographical centre of this outdoor enthusiasts' paradise. Hillwalking here is superb. Large unspoiled areas of great natural beauty and tranquility are dominated by the Merrick at 843m and the slightly lower Cairnsmore. The latter and Wigtown Bay are world class nature reserves, where ornithologists flock to watch the geese and other migrant birds during the winter and spring. There are trails, developed by Forest Enterprise, for walkers and cyclists, woodland walks and unlimited coastal pathways. Beautiful, uncrowded beaches are a paradise for families with children. Outdoor activity centres offer adventure sports such as kayaking, mountain balling & water ski-ing. This is also a very popular area for gentler pursuits such as photography, art and nature studies. The River Cree gives access for salmon anglers, while trout and coarse fishers are provided with excellent sport in the local burns and lochs. Sea angling is available from both shore and boat. In season, deer stalking and rough shooting may be pursued in the vicinity, while for others, the town boasts an 18-hole golf course, tennis courts and green bowling. The town's Merrick Leisure Centre is available to the public at weekends and during the holidays for swimming and indoor sports. The community-owned Cinema will crown the entertainment provided by hotels and public houses. Further interest and enjoyment may be discovered in the local Museum housed in the old St. John's Church, and within an hour's drive you will find many fascinating and varied visitor attractions. http://www.newtonstewart.org/

Sightseeing

Robert Adam’s cliff-top masterpiece rises above a world of woods, beaches, secret follies and play parks Discover 40 buildings and secret follies in this country park, including the magnificent cliff-top castle. Don’t miss Robert Adam’s Oval Staircase – the dramatic centrepiece of the castle. Explore the woods, beaches, parkland, Swan Pond, deer park and cliffs. Admire the enormous collection of flintlock pistols and military swords. Run wild in the Adventure Cove and Wild Woodland play areas. This glorious 260ha estate was once the playground of David Kennedy, 10th Earl of Cassillis – a man who was keen to impress with his wealth and status. Opulent to the extreme, the park is planted with conifers and beech, sculpted around miles of sandy coastline dotted with caves, and finished off with a Swan Pond, an ice house, flamboyant formal gardens and fruit-filled glasshouses. The castle itself is perched on the Ayrshire cliffs, incorporating everything the earl could wish for in his country home. It was designed by Robert Adam in the late 18th century and is filled to the turrets with treasures that tell the stories of the people who lived here. https://www.nts.org.uk/visit/places/culzean

One of the most magnificent sights in all of nature is the night sky peppered with stars, distant planets and streaking meteors. Luckily for us, Scotland has some of the largest expanses of dark sky in Europe making it a perfect destination for eager stargazers. It is also home to Europe's second Dark Sky Park, the first of its kind in the UK, as well a myriad of Dark Sky Discovery Sites. These are places which experience low or practically non-existent levels of light pollution, revealing ink-black skies filled with dazzling stars. https://www.visitscotland.com/see-do/landscapes-nature/dark-sky-parks-sites/ https://www.darksky.org/our-work/conservation/idsp/

In 1665, by the side of Cross Water in Barrhill, John Murchie and Daniel Mieklewrick were found by soldiers to be in possession of Bibles and assumed to be Covenanters and shot to death. They were buried on the spot, and a memorial was built, known as "The Martyrs' Tomb". A modern inscribed monument erected in 1825 within a walled enclosure marks the grave of John Murchie and Daniel Meiklewrick, two Convenanters who were shot and buried here in 1685. Three fragments of an earlier tombstone, inscribed on one side "Here lys John Murchie and Daniel McJlurick martyrs by bloody Drummon they were shot 1685", and on the other "Renewed by Gilbt McIlurick in Alticonnach 1787", lie within the enclosure. The former inscription must have been on the original stone, as it appears in the "Cloud of Witnesses", published in 1730. "The Martyrs' Tomb Walk" is now a popular scenic walk which follows the banks of Cross Water for 600 metres from the bridge in the village centre to the tomb itself.

was founded in 1244 by Donnchadh, Earl of Carrick, following an earlier donation of 1225, to the monks of Paisley Abbey for that purpose. They reputedly built nothing more than a small chapel and kept the balance for themselves. The Earl took the matter to the Bishop of Glasgow for arbitration and, winning his case, forced the monks to build a proper abbey. Crossraguel was sacked in 1307 by the army of Edward I. It was rebuilt on a larger scale and remained a monastery until 1560, when the Reformation ended monastic institutions in Scotland. Some of the stone has been removed for local construction, but the Abbey ruins remain some of the most complete of any medieval religious house to survive in Scotland. The site is looked after by Historic Scotland and is open to the public with an entrance charge.

Feoch Meadow (SWT) Feoch Meadows is regarded as one of the finest grasslands in Ayrshire and is designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest. Along the Feoch Burn, free-draining neutral banks are interspersed with flushes, drainage lines and marshy areas. The burn is fast flowing with deep pools and several small rocky gorges. The flatter fields over the majority of the site are a mosaic of dry and wet acid grassland, rush pasture and mire. Plants that are uncommon or rare in the county, including nine orchid species, are found throughout the site.
