Beach

Unlike beaches elsewhere that are made up mostly of pulverized coral, Siesta Beach's sand is 99% quartz, most of which comes from the Appalachian Mountains. Bring your drinks, snacks, towels and swimsuits. It's easier to walk over than try to find parking! There are volleyball courts, tennis courts, a playground and restrooms right off the beach as well!

Great beach on Venice Island, south of Siesta key. They have a really fun restaurant right on the beach. Venice Beach also has a reef just a quarter-mile offshore. Bring snorkeling or diving equipment to explore the reef in full. Venice Beach is also one of the only beaches near Sarasota to have lifeguards. You and your family will be in good hands while swimming.

Looking to be active at the beach and not just suntan? Caspersen Beach in South Sarasota County is a great place to go canoeing and fishing. It’s also one of the largest shelling beaches in the area. Even shark’s teeth are often found washed up along the shore. Caspersen Beach is close to downtown Venice. In Venice’s city center, you can grab a drink or dinner after spending the day at the beach. There are also several challenging hiking trails or serene walking nature trails for a more laid-back experience.

Wondering where to go in Siesta Key for snorkeling and diving? Look no further than the Point of Rocks. The aptly described point isn’t as scary as it sounds; Point of Rocks also happens to provide fun for the entire family. At Point of Rocks, the water’s depth doesn’t reach over five feet, making it welcoming for families, with kids of all ages. The sprawling tide pools provide glimpses of vast marine life. Spot fish zipping between enclaves or crabs crawling along the surface. In order to get to the Point of Rocks, first arrive at Crescent Beach and stroll until you reach the southern point. A large wall, eroded over thousands of years by the Gulf of Mexico, greets you. Beyond the wall is a magnificent display of natural pools and diving areas. Just be sure to wear something protective on your feet to explore the Point of Rocks to the fullest extent.

On the northern end of Longboat Key, Beer Can Island is one of the best places to go in Siesta Key. Roughly 45 minutes north of Siesta Key Village, Beer Can Island is full of sprawling mangrove forests with a white sand beach cutting in. The natural environment is both stunning and fragile, with bleached driftwood finding forever homes on the picturesque local beach. A scene straight out of Cast Away, Beer Can Island is also full of color and visual contrasts. The turquoise colors collide with the forests while the fallen trees feel perfectly out of place in such a fairytale-like environment. Be sure to bring your hammock to squeeze the most out of this popular attraction. The majority of visitors come to the island by boat, making use of the shallow waters to beach their boats without needing a dock. Or you can reach Beer Can Island on four wheels via Broadway Street or North Shore Road.

Hearing the name Ringling might lead you to believe this is just a circus. But The Ringling (John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art) has a wide variety of activities & exhibits that are among the must-see attractions in Sarasota. The main attraction at The Ringling is its art museum. The famous museum features 21 galleries based on the lives of the Ringlings, who founded the Ringling Bros. & Barnum and Bailey Circus. Located on Bay Shore Road, the circus museum also charms with serene landscaping and beautiful palm trees that are part of the Bayfront Gardens. Take a self-guided tour or join a group and hear about its history from a professional guide. The photo exhibits at the Ringling Museum of Art are constantly changing; there will be new things to see every time you visit. The museum is also on the National Register of Historic Places. It offers history, art, and beaches all in the same place. While visiting The Ringling also save time to check out the Ca d’Zan Mansion. The eye-popping five-story home was built in 1926 in a Mediterranean Revival architectural style, serving as the winter home of John and Mable Ringling. Reminiscent of Venetian palace, it’s well worth a peek for architecture buffs.

A joy to visit, Owen’s prepares some of the area’s best seafood and serves it in a rowdy Old Florida shack where the boisterous conversation is soundtracked by twangy folk standards from a live band in the back yard. We love whatever’s fresh on the “Naked Fish” menu dressed with either the brown butter Hollandaise or lemon-caper butter. A meal isn’t complete without a side of the restaurant’s perfect collard greens, and the succotash is a home run. Don’t miss the chance to snap a pic on the tire swing out back.

The newer restaurant, near the northern tip of Longboat Key, is built with tiered seating, which gives every diner a view of the lapping waters of Sarasota Bay, and the space is a swanky, polished, upscale midcentury Florida dreamscape. On the other hand, at the original location, on St. Armands Circle, when the weather’s nice, the roof rolls back, and if you request the right table, you can sit underneath the stars and gaze across an intimate table into the eyes of the person you love the most. Whichever destination you choose, luckily, you can trust that the food will be on point. Chef Dylan Elhajoui has constructed a creative menu that has a little something for everybody.
