0.2 MILES AWAY (a few minutes walk) - Craiglockhart and Colinton Dells follow one of the most attractive sections of the Water of Leith. The woodlands are classified as ancient or long-established. Protection afforded by high banks and thick undergrowth make it a natural habitat for a range of wildlife - voles, hares, weasels and roe deer. More than 80 species of birds have been recorded - look out for the heron and try to catch sight of the kingfisher. Follow the paths and bridges and you will come across picnic areas with benches, grottos and Redhall Castle, Walled Garden and House, the latter rebuilt in 1756 by George Inglis who laid out the grounds and created the grottoes. There are also two pubs (The Spylaw https:/www.thespylaw.com and The Colinton Inn http://www.colintoninn.co.uk) serving a range of freshly cooked dishes, bar snacks as well as real ales and malt whiskies. Blackford Pond and the surrounding wetland are important for water birds such as swan, little grebe, heron, pochard, mallard and tufted duck. Moorhen and coot nest at the edge of the pond amongst the reeds. Scrub, grassland and cliff faces around Blackford Hill provide food and shelter all year round. Look for linnets, skylark and meadow pipit in the gorse bushes on the hill.
During summer evenings, take a stroll around the pond and watch for bats!
Blackford Hill was created from the oldest rocks in the city, when lava flowed across a red sandstone desert 400 million years ago. The hill is classically 'crag-and-tail' shaped, formed from a vast ice-sheet moving eastwards, scratching, scarifying, exposing the rocks into escarpments, gouging hollows and valleys.
There is a permanent orienteering course here, which is accessible at all times. Map packs can be bought for £2.00 from the Hermitage Visitor Centre in the Hermitage of Braid, or through the website of Edinburgh Southern Orienteering Club (www.esoc.org.uk).
Why not head to The Lodge Coffee House for some refreshments after your walk. Sitting right at the gates of the Hermitage of Braid Local Nature Reserve, The Lodge gives walkers, visitors and locals a peaceful, well deserved coffee stop. In addition to their range of home-made cakes and other sweet treats, they have a lunch menu of soup, sandwiches and savoury crêpes.
