Founded in 1670, the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh (RBGE) is the second oldest such garden in Britain. It's also one of the largest, and boasts an impressive 13,200 different plant species. Within its magnificent 70 acres are a herbarium with a collection of over three million specimens. Britain's biggest palm house; a tropical house with exotic orchids; an alpine house; a terraced moorland garden; a heather garden; and an extensive arboretum with rare giant trees from the Himalayas, North America, and China. Other highlights are the woodland garden, with its colourful azaleas, hydrangeas, camellias, and rhododendrons; an aquatic house, with tropical water plants such as the pink water lily from India; and touring displays in the Exhibition Hall. For a special festive treat, visit for the spectacular light displays over the Christmas period. A variety of educational programs are also available for those wanting a more immersive experience.

Scenic beach with views of Bass Rock & Tantallon Castle, as well as forest walking trails.Well worth the entry fee and although some other people are complaining about the dirt road I say let’s not pour tarmac and concrete everywhere for our convenience and let’s just enjoy this quiet, hidden gem of a lovely beach in it’s natural existence. Please don’t forget to pick your rubbish and take it home with you

My favourite of all the Scottish Galleries. But then I am a modern art fan. There are two galleries here No 1 and No 2 literally opposite each other across a road you could easily spend a full day in each of them. Located in Edinburgh’s West End there is a gallery link bus from the national gallery on Princes Street( £1 charge each way). From the Barbara Hepworth and Henry Moore sculpture in the garden setting to the Lichtenstein in the gallery this setting keeps on giving. Inspired curation provides a host of specialist exhibitions throughout the year. Currently a Paula Rego exhibition (spring 2020). You cant see everything on a short trip to Edinburgh but if you love art this is a must. Great cafe which is just as well as a bit of a walk to alternatives.
