Food scene

This is a great place on Sacramento Avenue with views of the mountains and the railroad passing by. Great for families and couples alike, with lots of charm, great food, games for the kids (and adults). They offer breakfast, lunch, and dinner and have an espresso bar, as well as draft kombucha and beer on tap. For plant-based eaters, they have lots of options as well. We love their buffalo chicken cheesesteak sandwich and their fries are some of the best we’ve ever had.

Great little brewery operating outside of an old automotive shop. Patio dining is awesome in the warmer months, with great views of mountains. Try their pesto mussels and the elk burger, two of our favorites. In the summertime they use their own peaches on the property to make fantastic dishes as well. Flagship beer is their Rusty Spike Imperial Red and it’s delicious 😋!

This is one of the best fine dining experiences in the North State. Professionally trained chef, along with his wife, serve up some of the best fine dining, locally sourced and seasonal fare. Great wine selection. Menu is always changing with the seasons, but if you are here in Springtime, the morels are simply outstanding. Beautiful outdoor quaint patio covered in grapevines and lights- super romantic.

This is just a short drive up. to Mount Shasta and worth every minute. Great indoor and outdoor vibe, some of the best craft pub food around. Wonderful local beer and wine selection. Great for families and couples alike. Get the ahi tuna sandwich and the duck fat fries-- so good!

Best (HUGE) burgers in California in our opinion! Using lots of unique toppings, veggies, and only grass-fed beef, they have us hooked. Garlic parm fries are outstanding, a must have. They also bake their own sticky buns and we often get them for morning brunch treat when we're up here in Dunsmuir.

This is a great place to visit and dine if you have small to early-adolescent age kids, as they have so many rail cars/cabooses used as motel rooms, and a locomotive engine as their restaurant. The dinner car is big and an experience for all. Food is standard American fare, and has so-so reviews, but we've always enjoyed it, but moreover, we enjoyed the kid's wonderment about it all. Gorgeous views of the Crags at this place-- they loom over you!

Very short, easy hike to beautiful waterfalls. Dunsmuir is in the process of linking this trail with a trail to Mossbrae Falls, so be on the lookout for this completion.

Gorgeous falls but be aware you have to walk along the railroad tracks (lots of room off to side, at least 30 feet) for about a mile, so be mindful of taking small kids and elders. Wear tennis shoes as rocks large and can be ankle rollers. Parking for this trail is on Dunsmuir Avenue, just 200 feet or so, North of Yaks on the 5 (cannot park in the Shasta Retreat neighborhood where the trail starts, but you can walk through it to access trail)

A moderate to hard hike, about 5.5 miles RT. Gorgeous views and a great uphill workout. Take good hikers, trail shoes, as if you choose to go up to Castle Dome (for the best views), you'll be on flat granite, so good grip is necessary. The whole RT hike will take you about 2.5-4 hours, depending on hiking speed, so be prepared with water and snacks. Springs along the way also allow you to refill your water bottles! Dogs are not allowed on this trail.

Great little mountain lake with trails to walk, kayaks and SUPs to rent (only at campground beach). Best is to get there early in the morning, rent your flotation device, and head out to one of the more secluded state beaches or coves. If traveling with kiddos, they have an inflatable water park that is super fun!

Fun park with a cool vibe, many different walks of life here, just doing there thing in funky Mt Shasta. The real attraction is the spring headwaters of the upper Sacramento River, some considering it to be sacred healing waters (some just filling up their water bottles due to it being perfect spring water ;). Cool playground for kids, an excellent spot to take a picnic.

A great hike to a beautiful mountain lake! About 3 miles RT, it is moderate for active people, strenuous for less active, or elders. You access this trail from the Castle Lake trailhead (also listed in this guidebook), or just drive to the Castle Lake parking area and go left from parking area into trail. It can be tricky to follow this trail, as it's not well marked, but usually enough people here in warmer months to help guide you. Dogs are allowed on this trail. I recommend the AllTrails app, it does a good job of keeping you on trail.

This trail is difficult at times, and not well marked, and has varying lengths, depending on where you start. We love day hiking all of it, but if you want to head to parking lot to enjoy lake, it is mapped on Google and Apple maps. From there, you can head left out of parking area to go to Heart Lake, about 3 miles RT. Dogs are allowed. Moderate-strenuous depending upon your fitness for this extra trek. If physical limitations, I recommend driving into Castle Lake parking area and just exploring this area :)

PCT access is off of Soda Creek exit, just 5 min south of us on I-5. Park to the right just off exit, and make sure to take all your valuables out, as unfortunately, we have witnessed break-in's. It is a wonderful trailhead, moderate, and will lead you to access Castle Crags trail if heading left (use your maps app or AllTrails app for directions). Dogs are allowed on the PCT, but not on the trail to Castle Crags.

Entertainment

Outdoor live performances in the warmer months, featuring local and traveling musicians on a quaint patio downtown. Located just a few steps from Cafe Maddalena's and Wheelhouse. They sometimes sell wine during the performance, but I believe you can BYOB ;). Walkable from house, we love to eat at Wheelhouse or Maddalena's and then stop in for some live music (donations are requested at the door, and worth it for this local community gem).
