Food scene
In Washington, check out Rachel K’s, Shep’s Grill, Grub Brothers, Down on Main, Parley’s Sip and Steam, Captain Cook’s and The Place while you’re downtown shopping in the many little shops. Fine dining can be found at The Hackney and Bank Bistro. The Hackney is also home to a gin distillery. Think gin is not for you? Try some. Washington is also soon to be the home of two microbreweries. Both on Main St. One with a roof top outdoor bar which will offer beautiful views of the waterfront docks and the sunsets.
You’ll also find Marabella’s on Carolina Ave. for good Italian food. For Mexican, we recommend La Mesa or La Riberra on 15th St. And a trip to eastern NC would not be complete without eating some good old eastern NC pig BBQ. We recommend Hog Heaven out on W. 5th St not too far out of town. And yes, you’ll find fresh seafood at Washington Crab Shack on John Small Ave on your way back to Bath.
You can also go to Belhaven for dining. You’ll find fresh seafood at Fishhooks, fine dining at Spoonriver and good food and drinks at Jack’s Tavern.

Beach
About 2 hours away, you’ll find Atlantic Beach on the Crystal Coast of Bogue Island.
Visit Fort Macon State Park, where you’ll find Fort Macon which guarded Beaufort Inlet during the Civil War. Fort Macon State Park also has public access to the beach with a beach house to refresh yourself before your drive home.

Ride the ferry from Swanquarter to Okracoke. It’s a long ferry ride across the Pamlico Sound, but worth the day trip. You’re only a short ferry ride from Okracoke to the famous Cape Hatteras Lighthouse.

Be sure to secure tickets to Paul Greene’s THE LOST COLONY, America’s longest running outdoor drama about the English settlement, the birth of Virginia Dare, and their disappearance. Kitty Hawk and the Wright Brothers’ Memorial is not far away in Kitty Hawk. Neither is Jockey’s Ridge, the largest sand dune on the east coast.

The Historic Bath Visitor’s Center offers a guided walking tour of this historic small town, home for Edward Teach, AKA Blackbeard. Visit the Palmer-Marsh House, the Bonner House and NC’s oldest church and see what it was like to live and worship in the 1700s.

Bring your bathing suit. Water shoes are also highly recommended as the creek bottom is littered with old ship’s ballast stones, sunken timbers, and the occasional mollusk shell. The calm, warm waters of Bath Creek will be soothing and refreshing on the warm or hot summer day. Kayak or paddle around on the SUP and have a great time.
