We recommend this restaurant for those looking to have a variety of choices. Knoxville natives serve pizza, sandwiches, salads, and even have their own bakery here. Not to mention it’s on historic Market Square.

Historic Market Square is picturesque, friendly, and the center of all Knoxville-led festivals etc. They have a farmers market in the summer, ice skating in the winter, dog-lovers festivals, and amazing businesses lining the wall way. My personal favorites are Myrtles Chicken + Beer, Presidential Pub’s rooftop (you can also catch local improv there on Tuesday nights), and Cafe 4. Market Square has also been in several tv shows and movies, like the Bachelorette. Pro tip: free parking at the market square garage, even on weekends!

Less than 10 mins from the Airbnb, this locally owned coffee shop was the first to do craft coffee in Knoxville. Founded by 2 brothers, this place has incredible locally roasted coffee, and insane bagels with gourmet cream cheese. I actually worked there for 9 months when first moving to Knoxville, so it hits close to home for me!

Self serve alcohol? Yes please. This taproom features hundreds of ciders, sours, beers, wines, and seltzer’s. I know the owners so if you go tell them you’re staying in Bailey and Landon’s Airbnb! They also have live music, events, and food!

Sightseeing

Gay street and it’s neighboring Market Square are the center of downtown Knoxville. This historic Tennessee Theater with its shining nostalgic lights is an icon on this street. Our favorite places on Gay Street are Maple Hall for drinks and classy bowling, Cruze Farm for local top notch ice cream, and K Brew in the Hyatt hotel lobby for locally owned coffee!

Activities

The best things to do in Knox!
Live music, incredible cocktails, and upscale BOWLING. Yeah, bowling. We didn’t know bowling could be classy until Maple Hall. My fiancé and I had our third date here and have been regulars ever since.

Who doesn’t want to throw an axe?? Take yourself back to a medieval activity with modern flare and class. This lumber-sexual (a term that means woodsy and raw while being stylish) business is fun and competitive all at the same time. Go give it all you’ve got!

Warning: only go here if you’re a fan of country music, cheap drinks, cowboy boots, the real country people of East Tennessee, and a great time. I personally love getting out of the city and making a fool of myself line dancing, but it’s not for everyone! I describe this place as Cracker Barrel with alcohol. They have free line dancing lessons thursdays and sundays at 7pm, and great concerts! If you end up going let me know and I my fiancé and may just tag along 🤠!

Neighborhoods

Walking distance from Market Square and Gay Street, the Old City is exactly that- the old part of Knoxville. This incredibly beautiful area has historic architecture with modern food and activities. Best coffee in the old city: Awaken. Best drinks in the Old City: Pour Taproom. Best food: this is tough, but Kefi, Lonesome Dove, and Fin Two are all amazing. Best store: Rala Boutique is adorable and features only local art and trinkets. Much of my house is decorated with items from Rala.

Affectionately called SoKno, this area lies just across the Gay Street bridge and is almost like a town of its own! Incredible food and drink, lots of local biking and kayaking on the Tennessee River walkway, as well as access to the best nature Knoxville has to offer (besides the Smokey Mountains). Best coffee in SoKno: Honeybee. Best drinks: Alliance Brewing. Best fancy food: Simpl. Best pizza: South Coast. Best food trucks: South Side Garage.

How to pronounce things

We in East Tennessee prefer to take anything with the sound “ville,” and pronounce it as “vull.” For example: Knoxville = Knoxvull. Maryville = Maruhvull. Does it really matter? No. But if you want to look like a local that’s the way to do it 👍🏼. Also, Ijams Nature center looks like it would be pronounced “eye-jams,” however it’s actually “eye-ums.” Dont ask why.
