Sightseeing

This is hands down one of my favorite places in the city and really close to the Capitol building, and the U.S. Botanical Gardens. There are a few tables around the fountain to sit and read or bring a snack. Get off of the orange line metro at Federal Center SW to enjoy this gem.

This place is gorgeous and its a great spot to look up the National Mall towards the Capitol building then down the mall to the Lincoln Memorial. This views are stunning. I would recommend sunset and sunrise for something special.

This is a DC must see. Notice that it is two different colors of quarry stone because original construction was halted for two decades. Make sure you walk all the way up to this monument and walk around it.

One of the best views in DC. You can see the entire national mall all the way to the Capitol building when you stand on the stairs of the Lincoln. We would sit here at night when I was a teenager. Long, long, long ago.

If you really want a taste of the real DC, go here on a Sunday and have a picnic, dance with the drum circles and just enjoy your day.

Tired of museums and monuments? Grab a bikeshare bike and bike the trail along Rock Creek. Dock your bike and hike the paths along the creek too. It's a nice slice of nature in the middle of the city. It's also the best way to drive through the city and avoid all of the lights. Just make sure you follow the signs during rush hour (morning and evening) as they change the direction of the road to one way during those times and I would not recommend driving during those confusing times as a first timer in DC

Food scene

There is a bar on the top of the Watergate Hotel with incredible sunset views along the Potomac river. Go early to snag a spot to sit and just know that you will throw down some heavy change for that cocktail, but hey, you're on vacation!

Delicious French food in a gorgeous setting but not stuffy and it's, oddly, home to one of the best burgers in DC . It's in a lively area of DC too so fun to walk around at night and hop around after dinner.

How could you not LOVE melted cheese and bread? Stable is a Swiss restaurant on the H street corridor very close to the house. Eat all the fondue or raclette all night long, or they also have amazing main dishes too... if you have room. The owner, Silvan and David the chef have always been warm and inviting which makes this one of my favorite local spots.

Do you love to people watch? I certainly do! Have an amazing meal here inside of the Line Hotel then belly up to the bar downstairs before and after your meal. It's a bustling spot and sure to keep you entertained

Middle Eastern dining and they now have a Michelin star which means it's nearly impossible to eat there. You definitely need a reservation. If you're lucky to snag one last minute ressie that someone couldn't make you should absolutely snag it. Watch them roast meats on a beautiful open flame grill area. No regrets.

So much people watching and lots and lots of food vendors in an area that once had nothing but weird little cachkie warehouses and meat wholesalers. Now the area is bustling with new hot spots. Walk over to La Cosecha too during the day for some cool shops. If you like a no frills bar for a cheap beer, then check out Last Call.

Nature

Many people who live in DC don't know about this one. Go at the end of the summer when the lotus flowers are in bloom.

A giant park to run around and it's pretty close to the house but I would recommend driving there, using a ride share like Lyft, unless you are an adventurous urban bike rider, then...go for it on your two wheels, I do. Bring your pooch and a picnic. It's only opened in the daytime. You can bike around the park too.

Neighborhoods

This is a very lively area along the Potomac River with live music venues, incredible restaurants, cobblestone streets (leave your heels at home ladies), fire pits along the docks and you can take the water taxi to Georgetown, Old Town Alexandria in Virginia and the National Harbor in Maryland. The Wharf is home to one of my favorite places that we went when I was a kid....the fish market
