Hotchkiss is a quiet, quaint little town full of farmers, ranchers, tradespeople, and still a few coal miners. There are a handful of restaurants, quirky stores like the Creamery Arts Center, Cowboy Collectibles, and the Wills Gallery and Used Books Store. On the outskirts of town are numerous farms, many of which practice organic standards, wineries, and ranches. To learn more about the town's interesting history, check out the Museum open Saturday from 1-4pm. https://www.deltacountycolorado.com/stay/towns/hotchkiss/

Paonia is an eclectic, happening little town tucked back into the base of the West Elk Mountains. It has a community-owned theater called The Paradise, several art galleries and boutiques, and a good selection of restaurants and bars/pubs/tasting rooms. In the summer time, there is always something fun going on, from Harvest Fest and Cherry Days Festivals, to the weekly free concerts in the park by Pickin Productions. The valley boasts the largest concentration of organic farms in Colorado, many of which surround Paonia. There are numerous wineries, as well, and a goat creamery called Western Culture where you can buy some delicious cheese to go with your wine. http://paoniachamber.com/

The nearest "big city" to us, Montrose is a great place to stock up on groceries and supplies. They also have quite a few fun day activities, such as the Ute Museum, the Water Sports Park, the South Rim of the Black Canyon, and several good restaurants and breweries. Some of our favorites are Horsefly brewing, Colorado Boy pizza/brewery, and the Nepalese restaurant Pun Hill. View their website for more info: https://www.visitmontrose.com/

Marble is a historic mining town and still is home to an operating Marble mine. The roads are lined with hunks of discarded marble, and skillfully-crafted statues created by local artists. There isn't much in the way of amenities but what it lacks there, it makes up for in gorgeous views and potential for adventure. A popular activity here is Jeep tours. I would recommend avoiding Marble on the weekends through the summer, as it can get very crowded on it's two roads in and out. The shoulder seasons are the best time to go: May-early June, and September-October. Bring a mountain bike or a 4x4 high clearance vehicle to get up into the high country and visit the historic little town of Crystal. And don't forget to eat at Slow Groovin' BBQ! Sightseeing

The Black Canyon is spectacular. There really aren't words to describe it. It is the deepest canyon compared to it's width in the Northern Hemisphere, sometimes dropping over 2000' nearly straight down from the rim. The North Rim is a nice place to visit because it isn't as crowded as the South Rim. There is a scenic drive with several points where you can stop and walk to the rim and enjoy the vastness. In the summer, you can book a boat tour down in the canyon at Morrow Point. It's a bit of a hike to get to but very much worth it. https://www.nps.gov/blca/planyourvisit/northrim.htm

This is a reservoir built to irrigate the fertile North Fork Valley. It has a visitor's center, and 5 entrances with access to the lake. Two of the entrances have boat ramps, one has a swimming area and beach, and all 5 allow fishing and launching of non-motorized craft like SUP boards and kayaks. There's a campground equipped with hookups, as well. It can be a refreshing place to go when it gets scorching hot out. https://cpw.state.co.us/placestogo/parks/Crawford

Grand Mesa is North America's largest flat-top mountain. It's worth it to go up there even for just a scenic drive. But there are numerous trailheads along the highway to get out, stretch your legs, and get into the woods. There are also hundreds of lakes that are great for trout fishing. In the winter time, it's a good place to go snowshoeing or cross country skiing. In the fall, the changing leaves are magnificent up there. For a quick, easy, accessible hike with great views, try Land of Lakes trail. For something more difficult and lengthy, look for Crag Crest trail. There are dozens of great trails up there for, both, winter and summer use. https://www.alltrails.com/parks/us/colorado/grand-mesa-national-forest

Our local mountain, towering over the valley. It's a fun, challenging summer hike that rewards you at the peak with a great view of nearly all of southwest colorado! Hiking

Coming at the Gunnison Gorge from the Uncompahgre River (Montrose) side is a great place to go as the temperatures drop but the winter moisture hasn't made things muddy yet. It's really hot in the summers out here. You'll need high clearance 4x4 to get to many of the trailheads. And some of the trails require a bit of technical maneuvering that might make them less than ideal for children or dogs. Make sure to get good info and maps before heading out. It takes a full day to get down to the river and back. There is great fishing at the river and some people like to spike a camp down there for a night. The National Parks Service operates a fantastic boat tour to the Morrow Point Dam with interpretive guide. The hike down to the dock is challenging, but it's well worth it. Available June-September. Great for families. https://www.nps.gov/cure/planyourvisit/boattour.htm
