Sightseeing

A must-do, go during the morning when there is less wind. There is a trailhead sign...keep to the right if you want to go to the lookout or left to the beach (longer walk). Take 101 north of town to the Old Coast Road turnoff. Turn left until you get to the Otter Point turnoff and turn right.

Go to Meyers Creek south of Gold Beach at low tide (look at the tide charts) to check the tide pools, anemones and beautiful rock formations. We use the trail down to the beach at the southernmost turnoff. Watch out for sneaker waves

Rogue River Walk Trail Not to be confused with the much more difficult Rogue River trail, this trail is easier and skirts along with Rogue River just east of Gold Beach. There are several access points but we usually start at Huntley Park. Keep to the left and park in the trees next to the picnic area. There is a trailhead sign. Good for kids. Here is a link to a brochure. http://orcalcoast.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/RogueRiverWalk.pdf

We always enjoy taking a boat ride up the Rogue River. There are a few trips but most are about 4-5 hours and you have lunch at a resort in the middle of the trip

Redwood Nature Trail

Located about 6 miles NW of Brookings, OR it is a very beautiful trail through the redwoods. It does have some steep sections and so might be considered intermediate for some. It can get a bit warm in the afternoon so try and go in the morning and bring water.

Groceries

I would recommend McKay's market for anything grocery items you need. They also have a deli. You can see the grocery store from the deck.

Beach Access

We prefer using the parking lot at the Gold Beach Visitor Center on the south side of town as beach access.

Mountain Biking - Whiskey Run Mountain Bike Trails

If you enjoy mountain biking, there is an excellent mountain bike area just north of Bandon (about 1.25 hr drive). It is free and has beginner to expert trails. You can rent a bike either from Pineapple Express in Port Orford or South Coast Bicycle in Bandon. Be sure and call ahead to make sure they have bikes for rent in stock as COVID-19 has affected supply nationwide.

Kayak/SUP Guided Trips

If you like to kayak or paddleboard, setup a tour with South Coast Tours. I don't think they are doing any tour that requires a van due to COVID, but you can still kayak the Chetco River in Brookings or they have other trips as well. Super fun with knowledgeable guides. We did the 1.5 hr kayak tour on the Chetco River. Very easy.
