Worth the 1 hr drive from the house or about 30 minutes outside of Hilo. Short hike with a spectacular views of Akaka Falls. You may also want to explore one of my favorite little towns on the way there or on your way back. Called Honomu :)!!

Beautiful easy hike in the Lava Tree State Park. Definitely check it out. In this area nearby you can also respectfully view up close the giant and vast lava flow fields. While there is not a single drop of active lava anymore, you can be mesmerized by exploring the hardened lava rock flows of the 2018 eruption. It is fascinating and sad at the same. So ALWAYS PRACTICE being respectful and caution in these areas. Mahalo

Love this spot especially on warm days! You’ll need to look up “Ice Ponds Hilo” to find your way. But it’s basically along the same street/area in Hilo where you’ll find other great beaches too. It’s about a 30 minutes drive or less from the house

One more local option for your grocery needs. I personally don't shop here much because it can be just as pricey as Island Naturals. So I'd rather just stick with my favorite grocery store. I only shop here in a pinch.
