Ferndale
Victorian architecture and lots of cute antique stores
The winding road out to the cove is beautiful of itself - lots of redwoods and great views. Be careful driving there, though! Shelter cove itself is part of the Lost Coast - the beautiful California coastline through which there are no highways. There are little restaurants at the cove, and there are lots of beautiful spots to see, like Black Sands Beach. Watch out for the strong currents though. Swimming is not recommended.

The square is actually a small park in the heart of Arcata, the local college town. Around the square are a bunch of shops, restaurants, bars, and cafes. There's a farmer's market here sometimes, and it's a fun place to spend time.
