St.Paul’s Catacombs are a typical complex of interconnected, underground Roman cemeteries that were in use up to the 4th century AD. They are located on the outskirts of the old Roman capital Melite (today’s Mdina), since Roman law prohibited burials within the city. St Paul’s Catacombs represent the earliest and largest archaeological evidence of Christianity in Malta. Reasons to Visit 1. The largest late Roman underground cemetery in Malta. 2. The underground chapel of St. Agatha (The Ctypt) has unique frescoes, that were painted in 1200. Other 29 frescoes were painted in 1480. The main altar of the Crypt was built over another rock altar in 1666. The catacombs are underground cemeteries to the 2nd and 3rd century AD! Here you can see the different types of graves, some time with the real skeletons. In the catacombs, you can see also two graves with frescoes that date back to the 4th century AD. And there is the earliest rock-cut church in Malta. This is chapel with the freeze all around, with pillars and capital
