What Coolum Has to Offer

An exceptional area you won't even need to leave to have a full and fun holiday.
BEAUTIFUL COOLUM Four Beaches Coolum Beach: Coolum Beach is the main beach and it’s wonderful. There are lifeguards on duty all year round. Coolum is considered a pretty safe beach however it’s a good idea to make sure you stick to the flagged areas especially if you’re not a strong swimmer or not overly familiar with the ocean. You can walk up to Stumer’s Creek for a paddle or keep walking and you’ll end up at Peregian Beach. It’s fun to take an early walk to Peregian, get coffee and then take the bus back. The walk takes me just over an hour and I’m not terribly fit. First Bay: The First Bay is separated from Coolum Beach by Point Perry where there is a lookout and facilities. The beach access point and on street car park is located 100 metres south of Scrub Road. This beach is a popular surf and fishing spot and is not patrolled. Second Bay: Second Bay Park has a small off street car park, a wheelchair accessible lookout and picnic facilities up top. Beach access down to Second Bay via fairly steep stairs. Located 330 metres south of Scrub Road, this beach is unpatrolled. This is a beach with lots of round rocks that, at certain times, make a great sound as the waves wash over them. The stairs alone are a great workout and it’s a nice diversion to take when doing the Yaroomba Walk. Third Bay: This beach is the nudist beach and there are new stairs making it easy to access. Beware the men who hang out in the trees watching, it can be unnerving. I personally wouldn’t take kids down to this beach though many people do. Whale Watching Coolum has two dedicated whale watching platforms open to all 24 hours a day. You can even sit in a café and use their binoculars to check out the action. Coolum Surf School can offer surfing lessons, give them a call and check out the options ph 0438 731 503 Walk to restaurants, cafes and great shops: You only have to cross the road to access the local spa, a hairdresser and coffee shop. Around the corner are more restaurants and shops of all kinds. Here are a few we like: The Shop Just around the corner you’ll find The Shop. Run by friendly locals Gaye and David The Shop is a bit of a Coolum Institution. It’s a great convenience store, a gathering place, a coffee shop and on Friday mornings it’s where local musicians jam. They also have lots of organic produce and a good range of health foods. Opening hours are usually around 6 am to 8pm. My Place A local cafe and restaurant with the best view in Coolum. Check out the happy hour from 3.30 when you can get great deals. This is our favourite place to go in Coolum. NEARBY WALKS Coolum Boardwalk A short beautiful walk up to Point Perry where you can watch whales and surfers, depending the season. Start just next to the Surf Club. This walk suits all levels of walkers, prams and wheelchairs. Coolum to Yaroomba Coast Walk – 5.6 km round trip/approx 1:10 min This gorgeous walk is such a treat to have locally. It is short, very easy and stunningly beautiful. It hugs the coast and you get some spectacular views. Start at the Coolum Boardwalk (which begins just over the road near the surf club) and walk South along the boardwalk. At the top of the hill you'll find a carpark and a few stairs into the bush, head down there and veer to the right - the path is easy to find and follow. Yaroomba Bushland Park – 20 min round trip Nestled in the green hills behind Point Arkwright, when you’ve had enough beach and sun, then here is a nice little loop for you. Through wetland, rainforest, vine forest and Wallum woodlands, it’s peaceful and shady with very little traffic considering its urban surrounds. An elevated boardwalk section makes it fine for all weather. After rain you are bound to hear the frogs that bring this area to life, plus you’ll see native gingers and other plants that don’t mind wet feet. Heading south from Coolum the turn-off to Neurum Road is approximately 2 km from the Surf Club, on your right just as you take the bend at Point Arkwright. Mount Coolum Boardwalk: 500 m round trip This raised timber boardwalk meanders through the Marcoola-Yaroomba Foreshore Bushland Conservation Reserve from Breezeway Street to the seasonal patrolled beach. It is a wonderful backdrop for photographs with spectacular views of Mount Coolum and along the coastline. It is approximately a 500 metre round trip and there is access down to the coastal pathway connecting the Marcoola Esplanade to Tanah Street East. Beach Access point 96.

Coolum's Amazing Tickle Park

The most wonderful beachfront park
Tickle Park: To access one of the most wonderful beachfront parks around all you have to do is walk across the road, cross at the traffic lights and turn left. In a few metres you are at the beautiful Tickle Park where you’ll find: Ocean view picnic shelters with clean free barbecue facilities (breakfast here is worth the effort) A wonderful kid’s playground Beach showers and public amenities A large open grass area - great for kicking a footy. Lots of natural shade and a stunning ‘magical’ fig tree that is adored by all the locals. $5 YOGA Classes. These great classes take place under the fig tree Sundays at 8am, Wednesdays at 9.30 and Thursdays at 6 am. The park has plenty of parking close by and is across the road from the shops which makes it a great place to gaze at the ocean while sipping the coffee you just purchased or relive your childhood with fish and chips by the sea.

Sightseeing

Climbing Mount Coolum is a bit of an institution - it's very popular. The walk to the top of Mount Coolum is 800 metres long. Depending on how fast you travel, it should take no longer than one hour to reach the top and return to the bottom. Runners may be capable of completing the trail in 20 minutes. When my brother visits he runs up and down 5 times before brekky while I've never even walked it!

Noosa National Park: Hell’s Gate Walk – 10.8km round trip Noosa National Park has a variety of walks and some are quite short. For a truly spectacular one, however, try the longer one to Hells Gate. It’s an easy walk that most people could tackle. Take your swimmers and plenty of time because there are lovely beaches on the way. In holiday time this walk can be quite busy.
