Sightseeing

Voted the best beach in the UK by Trip Advisor and regularly placed in the top ten best beaches in the world. Absolutely stunning, but it can get incredibly busy. I’d suggest you go early in the morning or for sunset. There is a bus service or there are two car parking options; either the National Trust car park in Rhosilli itself or park at Hill End camp site near Llangennith and walk the length of the beach. Its a couple of miles along the beach but lovely. There is a wide footpath along the cliffs from Rhosilli to Worms Head. You can get on to the Worm depending on tides. Check in with the Coastguard hut; their crossing times are extremely accurate. There is a lovely circular walk to Hill End camp site in Llangenith and back. You have a choice of walking over Rhosilli down, the mid-height coastal path or the beach. There is a coffee shop to break your journey before back. Alternatively steps will take you down to the beach.

Oxwich is a beautiful, large beach. It's safe to swim and is dog friendly. As a result, it is popular and can get busy during the summer. Go early in the day or in the evening to get the best of it. At low tide, you can walk from Oxwich to Three Cliffs Bay along the beach. Alternatively, you can visit the nature reserve in the sand dunes behind Oxwich and Nicholston Burrows. If you'd prefer to be in the water, you can also hire sea kayaks on site from Oxwich Watersports. To be on the water, we'd recommend Gower Coast Adventures. One note of caution, please keep an eye open for adders in the dunes, particularly in the summer months. For us, the perfect end to a long walk and a paddle is a stop in the Oxwich Bay Hotel for coffee.

Lovely quiet beach only exposed at low tide. Beautiful clear waters. Bit of a scramble down to it so not suitable for anyone with mobility issues. Paid car parking in a farmers field; you will need change. The turn off is around Middleton on the road to Rhosilli. Nice walk down the valley to the coast. Path goes down between two barns.

A chance to see the northern side of the Gower; very different in character to the beaches of the south. Whitford Lighthouse is situated on the Loughor Estuary and can be accessed via Cwm Ivy Nature Reserve. Its a lovely area to explore. You can walk out to the lighthouse itself but only on a low tide. Take care - the tide sweeps in quickly and people do get cut off.

At some point during your visit, you’re likely to drive over Cefn Bryn. It is a five mile ridge of Devonian Old Red Sandstone that forms the backbone of the Gower. There are some lovely walks in this area with spectacular views on either side over both North and South Gower coasts. Arthurs Stone is a popular spot to visit. It was thought to be an ancient burial site although no human remains have been identified or recovered. It is more likely a glacial erratic deposited at the end of the last ice age. Please be aware that the landscape of the commons is created by grazing; the area is home to Gower moorland ponies, cows and sheep. These lovely animals roam freely and have right of way over the roads. We ask that you treat our local creatures with care and patience. https://youtu.be/1NJ6OycIfzQ

The Wales Coast Path is the first path in the world to follow a country's coastline in its entirety. Dip in anywhere along its 870 miles and delight in jaw-dropping views, contemporary cultural hotspots, unforgettable encounters with nature, and thousands of years of history. I leave OS maps for the Gower in the house for you and I've marked some carparking spots and places to visit along the path. The South Gower coast path is hilly and challenging to walk as it rises and falls through the bays. The North Gower coast path is much flatter, with beautiful views along the Loughor Estuary. If you prefer an accessible and easy walk, the Carmarthenshire coast path is mainly flat with large tarmac stretches.

Outdoor Training Provider

If you want to learn new outdoor skills or just brush up on what you’ve done before, here are some options.
Tread Gower is a brilliant local business. Stuart is extremely knowledgeable about the local area and I'd thoroughly recommend him. He runs navigation and other training courses - Gower is a great place to upskill and enjoy the scenery all in one!

Driving on Gower Roads

Grazing cows, sheep and moorland ponies create the beautiful landscape of the Gower commons. Please note that these creatures have right of way on these roads. The speed limit is 40mph but we’d ask that you’re vigilant and patient with our local creatures. https://youtu.be/1NJ6OycIfzQ

Places to Eat

It’s hard to give advice as our pubs and restaurants have been closed for several months but we would usually have recommended the Kings Head in Llangennith, the Rake and Riddle on the road to Penclawdd, the King Arthur in Reynoldston, the Ship in Port Eynon and the Oxwich Bay Hotel. If you’d prefer to walk somewhere for food, the Kindgbridge Pub is usually a safe bet.
