Natural Hot Springs

Rotorua is in a hot zone due to volcanic activity right below us, so make the most of it and ensure you check out some of the beautiful hot springs we have in the region - some are even FREE!
It's the best place for a hot swim in a natural river setting, complete with waterfall - it's pretty unique to this geothermal area. Leave valuables (money, passport, cameras etc) behind or locked safely in your car, just take the bare minimum with you for your swim i.e. water bottle, snacks, swimwear, towel and jandals (aka flip flops, thongs). Enjoy a hot swim in a natural setting, expect an organic experience and in summer it is extremely popular.

You can enjoy these in the cool evening air which I find is the best time, avoid 6-7pm due to groups. The most popular side is the Pavilion pools, or you have the option to book a private pool also. There are acidic and alkaline pools, all outside at varying temperatures fed by the sacred Rachel Spring. I love going on sunset and gazing out at the lake. Lockers are provided, but take your own towel unless you splash out on the Deluxe Spa. This side offers a more exclusive experience, if you want to treat yourselves or are celebrating a special occasion like your honeymoon. The Retreat Spa might also be just what you need to make the most of a relaxing massage or spa treatment. Pavillion Pools $32pp Drive from 360 Clayton Rd, 10 minutes Last entry is at 10.15pm

This is another FREE hotspot, drive to Waiotapu Loop Road head past Wai-o-tapu Geothermal Park about 1 minute on you'll find a small bridge, usually you will spot a few cars parked on the side of the road. There are steps down into the river, take a cold beverage and enjoy meet some locals or other travellers. This is where a hot and cold stream meets, so find your perfect spot but remember it's an organic experience you are in a natural environment. We always recommend that you don't immerse your head under the water - as the hot water isn't treated. Leave valuables (money, passport, cameras etc) behind or locked safely in your car, just take the bare minimum with you for your swim i.e. water bottle, snacks, swimwear, towel and jandals (aka flip flops, thongs). CAUTION: this is a natural geothermal area and the river floor can be extremely HOT, be aware of this.

Hell's Gate is unique, there is an optional geothermal walk but most people go there to give the unique mud bath a go which is so much fun, although timed for 20-minutes you do get to move into the sulphur spa afterwards for an unlimited time. Be aware that afterwards, special care needs to be had with your swimwear. We recommend soaking in ammonia and can supply this for you, which neutralises the sulphur smells out of your clothes. Then you launder as usual. More info here: www.hellsgate.co.nz

This new attraction is a hit with the locals, especially the mountain biking community given that it's on the doorstep of the Redwoods/Whakarewarewa forest. Enjoy a beverage, with a shinny dip in the beautifully landscaped setting or go for the hot tub option. What a way to finish a day, whether you've been out walking or biking - you deserve a treat and we are sure you won't be disappointed. More info here: www.secretspot.co.nz

You would visit this, especially if you're enroute to Taupo as it's a little out of the way off Broadlands Road - look for the sign. Another 'free' hot spring pool, you can find a changing room and toilet here and carpark is right next to the pool so safety isn't so much of an issue. If you're lucky you may be the only ones here.

Geothermal

Hot springs and rivers, geysers, bubbling mud pools, colourful crater lakes and sulphur spas makes this area a must-see geothermal attraction. Make sure to see some of this while you're visiting.
A city centre public park, with various geothermal features from mud pools, bubbling hot springs, fumeroles to steam vents and my favourite highlights are Lake Kuirau and there's two spots you can soak your feet in the hot mineral water... perfect in rain or shine. Can't beat this park for one of the cities best "free" sightseeing attractions!

Te Puia is a great fusion of Māori culture meets geothermal, if you’re pushed for time during your visit we recommend Te Puia located 5 minute drive from the centre of Rotorua city. Your Day Pass entry gives you a free guided tour, showing you highlights of the park including the famous Pohutu Geyser, bubbling hot springs, rivers and mud pools, the NZ Māori Arts & Crafts Institute where you can watch master wood and greenstone carvers make masterpieces, and weavers using flax to make various traditional pieces. In addition to the tour you get free time to explore further on your own, don’t miss the Kiwi house so you can see our iconic native bird (no photography)! The cafe is brand new and you can try Māori kai (food) a hangi buffet lunch here - so delicious! More info here: www.tepuia.com

I love this peaceful geothermal valley, as it’s much less busy than Waiotapu. You follow a trail down a valley which takes about 2 hours it’s gentle and pretty easy. Along the way, make sure you stop for the crater lakes and bubbling hot springs. Something worthwhile doing while you’re here is the cruise on Lake Rotomahana, this is the site of the famous Pink and White terraces now buried under this lake after Mt Tarawera erupted in 1886. You will learn all about the geothermal activity and this eighth wonder of the world, which is a special part of NZ history. There are buses to bring you back to the visitor centre, so you only need to walk one way. Allow 2 hours for the self guided walk, but 4 hours to include the cruise - bookings for the boat are essential online or at the Waimangu visitor centre. More info here: www.waimangu.co.nz Drive time from 360 Clayton Road - takes approx 20 mins

Located just off Waiotapu loop road, so you can check this out at any time of the day. The bonus is there's plenty of parking and it's FREE, just look for the signs and it only takes a few moments to check out this phenomenon. A worthwhile stop if you are driving to Waiotapu.

This is another geothermal park experience in Rotorua, but by far the most popular, probably because access from the highway is easier. My highlights are Lady Knox geyser (although this is induced and only occurs once a day at 10.15am) the Champagne pool and Devil’s bath. You experience crater lakes, bubbling hot mud and hot springs. Bear in mind, if you’ve done Waimangu you probably don’t need to also see Waiotapu as the natural features are so similar. On a hot day it can be very hot looking at “hot” things as there’s not a lot of shade in trees. You only need to allow about 45 minutes for the geyser, go early to get a good seat and another 1.5 hours for the walk around Waiotapu. Note that you must get a ticket from the visitor centre, then drive back to the geyser. After that, you drive back to the visitor centre for your self-guided walk through the park - grab a map. I quite like the gift shop, but the cafe doesn’t offer very healthy food options. If you decide not to do this, don’t fret there is another geyser here in Rotorua much bigger and also goes off naturally. This is at Te Puia and I will talk more about that further below. Drive time from 360 Clayton Road - takes approx 25 minutes NO CASH ACCEPTED More info here: www.waiotapu.co.nz

Love to hike, explore lakes, rivers, mountains and natural geothermal areas - here's some must-sees!
The amazing network of trails at the Redwoods otherwise know as Whakarewarewa extends for over 190kms. Ideal for hiking, waking the dog, mountain biking or try out the Treewalk, a new attraction best seen after dark for the real wow factor, with its night light architecture and amazing features throughout the 45min treetop walk, must be confident with heights and the entrance fee is approx $NZ25

We have an amazing small river side walk, with bush and trees just 10 minutes walk from our house. Turn left out the front gate, head towards Pukehangi Road, turn left and walk the foot path right down the hill to where you cross a small bridge after a bend. It's this river you will follow, the council have just installed a lovely new pathway even suitable for walking in your sandals, jandals, flip flops or thongs you won't need hiking boots or anything. I've even taken my nephew down on his scooter the pathway is so super smooth and our dog adores it. So this will take you through to Goldie street, where you can cross to continue on through the park. The next street you reach is Edmund Road, again cross here and the pathway takes you all the way through to Sunset Road. At this point you can turn back to return through the park home or if you need to head into town the easiest way is to turn left onto Sunset Road, at the traffic lights turn right onto Old Taupo Road and turn left at the next set of lights which takes you onto Pukuatua Street. This takes you directly into the city centre past the famous Kuirau Park and weekly Saturday market. This pathway is ideal for jogging, running or biking - a great way to start your morning. Check out this article on the construction of it https://www.nzherald.co.nz/rotorua-daily-post/news/article.cfm?c_id=1503438&objectid=12252256

On your way to Taupo? Make this a stop along the way... it's 20 minutes drive south of Rotorua. This is a geothermal mountain, with the most amazing 360-degree views so take your camera, water, comfortable hiking shoes and even a picnic. The hike takes approx 1.5-hours to summit and just a short 10-min walk into the forest you'll find two amazing crater lakes (free!) which is so worthwhile especially when most geothermal parks charge entry fees. Short on time? If you're on a time constraint make time for at least this part. Facilities are minimal with a long drop toilet at base, be mindful of carrying out your rubbish and leave only your footprint. My favourite thing to do after is either pop down the road to Kerosene Creek or Hot and Cold Pool, Waiotapu (see my hot springs category).

As we live at the base of Mt Ngongotaha we want to make sure you get up to see some of the epic views. While most pay for a Skyline Gondola ride (om Fairy Springs Road) there is another way to see the views over Lake Rotorua and out to Mokoia Island. Our house is a 5 minute drive from the top of Mountain Road, turn right out our front gate, before the bend turn left onto Mountain Road. Weave your way to the top and you have two options a) chill and take in the views at the cafe, stop for coffee, beer or a meal at Aorangi Peak OR b) carry on to the car park where Mountain Road ends, from here you walk through a closed gate up a sealed road but has no traffic using it - this road services a satellite tower and has awesome views if you look back as you're heading up. It's part open farmland and part native forest towards the top. Takes approx half an hour to summit, bear in mind there's no views from the very top due to overgrowth but on your way up they are awesome and higher than the Gondola views. Just sayin' ! Enjoy, ensure you don't leave any valuables in your car. You will also see a track near the top which is called the Jubilee Track (no mountain biking permitted), but this links back down close to our house. So for those keen for a mean work out you could hike up Mountain Road and down the Jubilee Track - allow at least 2.5-hours for this. Will write about the Jubilee Track as well on my recommendations.

The Blue Lake is a fantastic spot for a good 1-1.5 hour walk around the lake, take a dip in the summer months or pack a picnic and have a BBQ with your friends or family. It’s a beautiful, popular lake but also nice for a drive. Further on from the carpark drive on towards the Green lake and you’ll find a carpark that gives views on a lookout over both lakes. The Green Lake is sacred (tapu) from the local tribe (iwi) and therefore you cannot access this at all. If you really feel like a drive further on, keep driving to Lake Tarawera this road winds along to the next big lake in the area.

Sightseeing

This is one of the most popular surf beaches in the country, as you drive along Ocean Beach Road and Marine Parade this really tells a story of the type of people who holiday or live at this beautiful seaside resort town. The main beach is great for swimming in the summer months, “swim between the flags” that way if you get into trouble, you will get rescued by surf lifesavers if you raise your hand. Or just stroll along the boardwalk, check out some cafes or boutiques. If you’re feeling more energetic climb Mauao (this is the name of the mountain) which locals love to run or walk up. It takes approx 40 mins up and about 20 mins down. Take in the sights as you go up and enjoy an ice-cream afterwards at the famous Copenhagen cones across the road from the hot pools (they are salt and also really worthwhile). Ask the locals if you can’t find Copenhagen cones but usually you can smell it before you get there. The main shopping street Maunganui Road is also really good for shops, souvenirs, bars, cafes and restaurants. Drive time from 360 Clayton Rd - 1-hour Our sun is really harsh in NZ, so wear hats, cover up and apply 30+SPF sunscreen

The Rotorua Night Market is one of Rotorua's great local markets and a family friendly must do event, popular with locals and visitors alike. Enjoy boutique style shopping, with the best the region has to offer in arts, crafts and produce. Taste the variety of ethnic cuisine (including Croatian, Indian, French patisseries, handmade Italian pasta and of course local kai!) and be entertained by our favourite and very talented local musicians. Lots of music, fun and entertainment to be had at Rotorua's most popular and vibrant market. Follow the Rotorua Night Market on Facebook for regular updates on each weekly event. The Night Market is on every Thursday evening from 5pm to 9pm (weather permitting) in Tutanekai Street (between Haupapa and Hinemoa Streets). The Market is open until 9pm and at times the temperature can drop quickly so bring a jacket or another layer of clothing. Some of our stallholders do have Eftpos available, however you may find it easier to carry cash. There are two ATMs on opposite corners of Pukuata and Tutanekai Streets, in the centre of the market. The queues can get long so you might like to bring enough cash with you. There is plenty of free parking (after 5pm) in the streets around the market. Come early to secure a park close by if you don't want to walk too far. Walking from the Lakefront to the Market will take around 6 minutes.
