Ideal in case of strong southern wids as it is on the north east side of the island. It not sandy but has big white pebbles!

Drive to the seaside village Apollonas from the North West coastal road and on the way make a stop at Agia, remnants of an old tower, and after a dip in the sea you can return to town from the inland road that passes through many picturesque unspoiled villages. In Apollonas there is the huge ancient marble kouros (statue) of Apollo. Plan a full day of it as the road is rather winding and the views will keep you enthralled so there's no need to rush.

All of these destinations can be located on local maps and Google. Make inquiries in town for bike and car rentals, local bus schedules and island tours as well.
The place to be as the sun goes down is definitely the islet Palatia, where today, since the 6th century BC, still stand the remnants of the Temple of Apollo and its grand entyway, the Portara (meaning large door).

Chalki or Halki is the island's old capital. There is an artistic atmoshere in this village filled with plenty of shops, cafes and restaurants as well as the old distillery factory of Vallindras which is worth visiting to get a taste of Naxos' famous citron liquer. Within walking distance from Halki you can visit some of the most beautiful Byzantine churches of the island, like Panagia Protothroni, Agios Georgios Diasoritis, Agioi Apostoloi (at Kerami village) and Panagia Drosiani (at Moni village)

In the villages of Ano, Mesi and Kato Potamia you can walk through the path next to the small river that passes through them. If you choose to go to Potamia, combine this trip with a visit to Melanes and the Kouros there.
