The National Trust site is a great place to start for things to do re walking and being in open spaces.
There are lots of grand houses to visit, many of which have beautiful sprawling gardens to walk from into the hills and back. Polsden Lacey is one I would recommend.

Box Hill Hike
Box Hill is a 30 min drive from the apartment and is part of the National Trust.
If this walk is too demanding there are lots of other trails to do up there.
