A short drive away is the small village of Newrybar. Harvest has a general store, for coffee and a casual meal, while the restaurant offers a more special dining experience. In peak periods it is probably best to book.

Great place for a casual breakfast up on the hill out of the hustle of Byron. Sit on the lawn and enjoy a great coffee and pick up some house made sour dough and treats for later.

If you are looking to that laid-back Byron vibe, this is the place. Tucked out of the way at Belongil beach it has outdoor dining under fairy lights and tropical trees. With a lineup of live music and a great pizza menu, you might just find the Byron Bay you were looking for. Easy to park and 15 minutes’ drive from Friday Hut. It is also a great place for coffee any time of the day.

Sightseeing

If you visit between May and October make sure you don’t miss out on this amazing experience. Wild Byron operates a small group whale watching trip 3 times a day. Tours leave from the marina in Brunswick Heads and it’s easy to book a time online that suits you. (www.wildbyron.com.au) With 40,000 whales migrating north this year, you will be amazed at the number of whales in the water. The mothers give birth in north QLD and then head back south to Antarctica. On the way, they often take their calves for a feed just off South Golden Beach and in this little ‘nursery’ you can often see the new calves breaching and playing with their mothers. An experience that is so special it is hard to describe. Don’t expect anything fancy in terms of visitor facilities at the marina – just a great opportunity to take a glimpse of nature in action.

Aim to start the walk approximately 1.5 hours prior to sunrise, so you can see it rise at the viewing platform at the top. This is quite a difficult hike at the final ascent!

Easily accessible viewing platform from the carpark and only a short 1km walk to the bottom of the falls, but quite steep in places. Great swimming hole to cool off. Killen Falls is about 12 km south on Friday Hut Road with the turnoff on the left.

Just a little further south from Lennox is the historic town of Ballina. Don’t be fooled by industrial estate and shopping centre as you exit the freeway. The old town grew up along River Street and if you keep going, you will find the River and the old town. It is also home to the Ballina Wall. This is a sea wall which was built in the late 1800’s to create a safe harbour. It originally had gas lighting so residents could ‘promenade’ on summer evenings, and although the gas lights have been replaced, it is still a favourite of locals and a great place for a run or a walk. Dolphins and turtles are often seen from the wall. There are well lit footpaths and an inland lake which the locals use for an early morning swim. Ballina also has ‘pay as you go’ bikes which you can pick up in town to explore the many cycle tracks around the area. The Ballina Wall isn’t well sign posted but is adjacent to the Ballina Surf Club. There is plenty of parking next to the club and you should be able to walk to the wall which is to the right of the car park.

The main beach at Byron Bay, in front of the pub and the surf club, is Main Beach. If you head along Clarkes Beach towards the lighthouse from there you will find The Pass. This is a small bay which is a favourite for those learning to surf and has a good little cafe. Further around again, you will find Wategos Beach. A beautiful small beach in the most exclusive part of Byron Bay. South of the lighthouse is Tallow Beach. This is an enormous beach which stretches back to Suffolk Park. My favourite part however is the bit right next to the lighthouse which can be accessed via Tallow Beach Road. If you go early, you might be lucky enough to spot the kangaroos in the grassland. North from Clarkes Beach is Belongil Beach. This can be accessed to the left of the main car park and is the local dog beach.
