The Venetian Fortress of Fortezza is built on the hill of Paleokastro, west of today's city. On this hill there was the acropolis of the ancient city of Rithymna and the sanctuary of Rocky Artemis.
Fortezza Fortress was built between 1573-1580 by the Venetians in order to protect the inhabitants from the Turkish threat.
