In 1995 explorer Clive Cussler uncovered the Hunley submarine, built in 1864. It was lost after sinking with its crew after a Civil War battle with the Union ship, the Housatonic. The vast area surrounding is a a rambling waterfront park, Old Naval Yard and National Historic Site featuring gorgeous moss-draped oak trees antebellum officers quarters. It is six minutes walk from the Creek House.
