Great overview of the 1973 eruption. They have dug up one house that used to lay under the ash and it stands in the middle of the museum.

A new and modern museum bringing two volcanic activities alive again, the 1973 Heimaey and the 1963-1967 Surtsey eruptions. You do not want to miss this one. Children like this one as well.

Beautiful area. This is where the first and only army in Iceland was based, after the pirate invasion in the seventeen hundreds. The lava flow stopped here as well. You find an old Norwegian style church here which was a gift from Norway due to a 1000 years anniversary of christianity in Iceland.

Getting Around
Plenty of free parking is at Landeyjarhöfn harbour.
If you are going to bring your car with you, it is advisable to pre book for it as some days are busier then others.
In Vestmannaeyjar, my house is only 10 minutes walk from the dock.

I have never heard of a person not liking the food in this local restaurant. Not the cheapest but high quality.

Sightseeing
Here an old settlement of the first settler in town, Herjólfur Bárðarson, has been rebuilt. You can experience how people lived in Iceland before plumbings and internet. This is also a beautiful area in town.

The most southern tip of the Island and can have strong winds as it is open to all directions in the Atlantic ocean. A great puffin watching spot as well. You can walk around the cape.

Eagle air flies from Reykjavik
If you prefer to fly to the island you can. Ernir (Eagle air) flies several times p.week from Reykjavik and it only takes 20 minutes.

Herjólfur ferry
Having your own car on the island is not a must, you will be fine without it, especially if you like to hike. However you might enjoy having a car to get to the southern tip of the island, which takes only a 5 minute drive, but perhaps an hour walk to get to. If you take your car, I advice to book for it in advance as some dates or timings of the day are more busy then others.

Enjoy and do not rush.
So many people I meet and host do regret having not being able to spend more time in Vestmannaeyjar. Many have planned a busy schedule to see the most of Iceland but here in town so many find the solitude they have been longing for... and then they have to leave the next day. I advice to have at least 2 days to really see the island and 4-7 days to get to know the island.
