One of two cafes - the other is the Eucalypt, named for a huge gum tree - at which to sit and savour the bustling atmosphere every Tuesday morning when the street is closed for the fruit and vegetable market. Altea is littered with tiny bars and cafes while the main commercial street, Avenue de L'Alt Rei En Jaume 1, hosts half-a-dozen cafes, especially popular around mid-morning, then winding down as the 2pm siesta nears. Tourists favour the hilltop plaza, which has outdoor cafes and splendid views, or the curving Mediterranean promenade, which stretches several miles between Cap Negret and Albir.

Possibly the easiest and cheapest method of journeying to and from Alicante airport if you don't want to use a taxi or rental car. The shuttle stops a few minutes away on Carrer Benidorm.

One of several places where kayaks can be hired and used to explore the dramatic coastline. The local tourist office provides maps of local walks along the coast, into the campo - full of smallholdings, growing olives, almonds, figs, citrus, pomegranates and loquats - and up to the sierra. Be careful to wear a hat and take water in the summer months. Best to set out early, although the walk to Cap Negret passes several small harbours that offer lunch, Cafe-Sant being my favourite.

A convenience store, A Totes H'Ores, is found nearby on the Placa de la Creu. Hiperber, the local supermarket, is on Camino El Ponet. Altea's weekly outdoor food market is held on Tuesday morning on Avenue de la Nucia, a few streets down hill from the apartment.
