The Florence market in the old covered market buildings is a great experience. It's open in the mornings, while upstairs there are are stalls selling street food, which are open till late at night. The market at Siena, on Wednesdays, in Piazza La Lizza is also worth visiting. It's known for its great food selection, and for appealing to local tastes. The local market in Monteroni is small, but quaint. It's held on Tuesdays, in Piazza Matteotti.

This restaurant is very popular. We like it because it’s just off the highway between Siena and Firenze, so it’s ideal if you need to take a driving break. It’s open all day and until late at night. The ‘finocchione’ and ‘porchetta' are fantastic.

This is our local café. It's just 2kms from the house, on a green square with an old petrol pump and ancient holm oaks. Sylvia makes a mean panino, nice light lunches, and a pretty good cappuccino, which is a bit of a find in Tuscany, where they don't have the same reverence for coffee as the northern Italians.

The best bruschetta we've had - served on warm, deliciously char-grilled bread. Their wild boar stew is also divine - tender and tasty the way it's supposed to be, but unfortunately seldom is in other places. On top of the good food, they're dead easy to find - just before the Coop - and there's loads of parking.

Located at Via XXI Aprile, Bettolle. Bettolle is in the middle of the Val di Chiana, a flat region of Tuscany that lies at the foot of Cortona and used to be swamp, until Leopold II drained it for agriculture. Leopold also encouraged the construction of farmhouses, in a style called the Leopoldino, which is very distinctive and striking. Ristorante Walter Raedelli is one of the best restaurants in the province of Siena - Michelin-star quality, without astronomic prices.

Tuscany doesn't have a great coffee culture like Milan and Turin, so getting a good cappucino can be a a challenge. The best in Siena is Nannini. There's one on the main piazza of Siena - Il Campo - or you can join the Italians on the commercial strip development on the Strada Massetana Romana.

The southern part of the Val D'Orcia is breathtakingly beautiful. In a province overflowing with amazing castles, Radicofani manages to stand out. Castiglioncello Del Trinora, perched on a peak overlooking the whole valley, is a beautifully restored village with a lovely hotel.
