Eating locally

Ealing has dozens of good restaurants. However, 100 metres from the house is Pitshanger Lane with several restaurants and two good pubs serving food.
Great English fish and chips. The fish is very very fresh straight from London docks. I recommend either cod (my favourite) or haddock. We always have "mushy peas" - a northern delicacy of puree marrowfat peas. See what you think. I love them. But beware - the portions are very generous. One large fish to share, one large chips to share and I think that's enough for two. Or if you have a healthy appetite, have medium fish and one large chips. You can always ask for more if you are still hungry.

A large and very typical English pub with good food. It has a massive garden at the rear which is great for children and they often have barbecues in the summer. If you want to sample English beer, always have the hand pulled ales. Remember, English beers are not fizzy and are served cool but not cold. My husband likes London Pride which is brewed locally by Fullers, but they have a selection of beers. India Pale Ale (IPA) is also a favourite. It was the answer to the problem of providing beer for the British Empire in the east. It was too hot to brew in India, so what was needed was a beer that could survive the gruelling six-month journey from Britain intact. In the 1780s, a London brewer called Hodgson answered the call by sending out a strong, heavily hopped beer called October ale that would normally be aged like wine before drinking. The beer not only survived the journey, but was found to have improved immeasurably. This was the prototype IPA; the beer gradually became paler and more refreshing to suit the Indian climate. It's now drunk all over the World.

Another good pub with good food. Much smaller than "The Kent" and noisier. Probably not ideal for children. But again a Fullers pub with good beer and the eating area is away from the bar. If you like pub food you should give it a try.

What can I say about shopping - this is London. OK - one recommendation. If you want to do all your shopping under one roof, there's a fabulous mall in Shepherd's Bush called Westfield. It has everything you could possibly want, and many for a drink places too. Shepherd's bush station is on the Central Line, only 5 stops fro Ealing Broadway.

Central line (Red) to Liverpool Street. Then it's a short walk to the Old Spitalfields Market where you can buy all sorts of artisanal "arty" ""crafty" gifts. From there head off to Brick Lane famous for its curry houses and retro clothing/bric-a-brac. If you want an original Beatles LP this is the place to go. On Sundays you can carry on to Colombia Road flower and plant market. Great just to see what's on offer.

Camden Town and Camden Lock have been a centre for the youth since the 60's. If you want hippy or punk clothes and shoes, this is where you'll find them. A very lively area, with art and artisanal shops. you can also have a beer in Amy Winehouse's pub, The Hawley Arms. Amy's favourite tipple was a 'Rickstasy', a drink unique to the Hawley Arms, consisting of vodka, banana liqueur, Southern Comfort, and Baileys.
