Syke Farm Tea Room, Buttermere, CA13 9XA. Phone: 017687 70277 A great place to eat and drink at the end of your walk round the lake ...or half way round if you've park up at Gatesgarth Farm at the far end of the lake, rather than parking at Buttermere village. To call it a 'Tea Room' does it a disservice. They do very tasty breakfasts, light lunches, afternoon teas, amazing freshly made pies and cakes and homemade ice cream which is actually made in the room behind the cafe, from milk provided by the cows grazing in the fields around you! The service is warm and friendly as is the cafe, that's housed in a converted barn. To find it: If you walk anticlockwise round the lake, from either end, you'll come to a fork in the path up at the village end of the lake. The left hand fork takes you on round the head of the lake and up past the pubs. The right hand fork is the one you want. It takes you up through trees and fields with a short scramble up a rocky bit. At the top of that path when the path forks again, keep heading left towards the village, across fields, through a farm yard and then Syke Farm Tea Room is on your left just before you get back to the road.

You probably wouldn't want to buy any livestock whilst on holiday in West Cumbria but Mitchells also hold a weekly Household Goods Auction. Viewing is on Wednesday afternoons and the auction sale is on Thursdays. Going to the auction is always an interesting experience and you might just bag a bargain to take home with you! There's also a good cafe there (Viva!) which does hot & cold drinks and tasty snacks & cakes.
