This theater in the middle of Custer State Park offers great theater and one of the most unique theatrical experiences available. Imagine driving through secluded woods and hills for half an hour only to find this gem surprisingly at the end of your journey. Shakespeare said, "All the world's a stage..." And the Black Hills Playhouse proves that to be true!

Once you get past the name Custer State Park is incredible! A trip on Custer's nature loop should be at the very top of every visitor's list! You never know what you will see on the nature loop but you will always leave amazed and humbled by the beauty of the scenery and animals.

Main Street Square during the day has music, ice cream, a toy store (with outdoor play area), and a splash pad. What more could you ask for? During the evening, Main Street Square is a great starting off point for walking to local pubs, bars, and breweries!

The Badlands are an absolute MUST DO (yes, I shouted that - because that is how passionately I feel about it). The Badlands are gorgeous and moving but, a word of caution, they get extremely hot in the summer time. To be able to truly enjoy the animals and scenery, start your journey early and plan to arrive at the Badlands as close to sun up as possible. If you arrive before the heat sets in, wildlife will still be out and about and you will be so much happier (believe me).

Jewel Cave and Wind Cave are both amazing places to visit. Both have multiple tour options so that you can find the experience that best fits you, your family, or your group. Check out their websites for details! We have gone on several of the offered tours and have not regretted them! A tip: In the summer, tours fill up VERY quickly. Check the website for the time that the box office opens and plan to be at the ticket booth 20 minutes before they open so that you get your pick of the tours/timing. If you show up when the booth opens, there will be a line and you will have limited tour options.

Keep peace during the road trip with these family favorites!
Evans Plunge is unlike any other swimming pool on earth! This historic gem is fed with naturally hot spring water and is an absolute treat for the entire family! Terrifying (but safe - I assume) water slides keep the kiddos occupied while adults soak in the blissful 80 degree water. I recommend leaving Rapid City early, driving Custer State Park's nature loop in the morning, and arriving at Evans Plunge for an afternoon dip. You won't be disappointed!

Don't go to Dinosaur Park if you are looking for accurately depicted dinosaurs (you will be disappointed) but the wonky dinosaurs make the park somehow more charming. This free park is a great place to let the kiddos burn off some steam during the day or watch a beautiful sunset with your honey with all of the lights of Rapid City spread out before you.

Black Hills Caverns is great for families with small kiddos and pre-teens. Their short guided tours are just the right length for the squirrely young'uns and their "gem panning" while waiting for tours is a really great way to keep kiddos cool in the heat of the summer time. For older kiddos or those without children, I would recommend Wind Cave or Jewel Cave tours instead of a Black Hills Cavern tour.

Blue Bell is one of the only stables in the area that offer rides for the littlest of the littles. They offer a 15 minute "Buckaroo" ride that consists of your little one in a tiny saddle on horseback and safely walked around by one of the cowboys/girls. For older/more experienced riders, I would recommend going on a longer ride and looking at some of the other riding options in the hills. Many places offer 1 hour, 2 hour, and half day rides.

Every kid that grew up in Western South Dakota has a childhood photo of them standing in Yogi Bear's picnic basket. This place has been a local favorite forever and for good reason! This free park has lots of swings, slides, and green space to play in but also references story book and Disney characters throughout the park. For a nominal fee, there is also a train and carousal ride. It is absolutely worth a visit for families that have kiddos 10 and under.

This hole-in-the-wall restaurant (I use that phrase with nothing but love) has the best Mexican food in the area. Hands down. Period. Wait staff is friendly and the interior is cozy. Both my husband and I agree it rivals any Mexican food we have found in all of the United States (even the meals cooked by his mother - but please do not tell her that!).

City/town information
The historic home of Wild Bill, Calamity Jane, Charlie Utter, and so many more. Deadwood continues to be a place to gamble, party, and just enjoy yourself in general! I highly recommend spending a day in Deadwood during your time in the Hills. While there stop by Woody's Old Fashioned Photos for a photoshoot (you won't regret it!), Chubby Chipmunk for chocolate (prepare yourself for chocolate heaven!), and watch one of the daily shoot outs on Main Street (they usually occur in the summer at 2 and 4 - but pop into a shop and ask when you arrive in town to get up to date information). You get extra credit points if you watch Deadwood (available on Amazon Prime) before visiting!

Spearfish is the resort town of the hills - for good reason! It is a must to spend a day in Spearfish when visiting the hills: drive the canyon (it may truly be the most beautiful place on earth!), visit the fish hatchery (especially if you have kiddos with you), and enjoy lunch at the city park. Every part of Spearfish is beautiful, well maintained, and enjoyable. Spend a day soaking it in!
