Food scene
From restaurants to takeaways, I have included a range of food recommendations to suit all types of budgets.
This gastro style pub is a great place for food within the cosy restaurant or a quick coffee at their recently opened café. The Sun Inn sits in view of Newbattle Viaduct, a grand piece of historic engineering that carries the Borders Railway line over the River South Esk in Newtongrange. The viaduct was re-opened in 2015 following the railway line being reinstated.

Stop for some coffee and cake within a beautiful setting. The highly reviewed café also serves a range of soups, sandwiches and desserts using locally sourced produce within a very modest kitchen. The café sits within the grounds of Penicuik House, a former grand estate house with only the shell of the building now surviving. The 18th-century palladian mansion was built on the site of an earlier house by Sir James Clerk, 3rd Baronet. It was destroyed by a major fire in 1899 and a major restoration was completed in 2014 by G Brown Stonemasons. After dropping the car at the parking area, the café is a short walk through the beautiful grounds. Within such a breathtaking setting, it is one of the best kept secrets in the area.

Founded in 1446, as the Collegiate Church of St Matthew, Rosslyn Chapel today attracts visitors from far and wide, drawn by its unique and mysterious carvings and the beauty of its setting. Rosslyn Chapel came to worldwide prominence through The Da Vinci Code, a novel written by Dan Brown, which was published in 2003. In the story, the main characters, Robert Langdon and Sophie Neveu, investigate a murder in the Louvre and, in doing so, follow a set of clues to unravel a mystery, taking them to London and then to Rosslyn Chapel. It is estimated that 81 million copies of the book have been published, making it one of the most popular of all time. In 2006, a film was made, based on the book. Most of the interior scenes of the Chapel were filmed here, and the main actors Tom Hanks and Audrey Tautou, were on site for a few days. The Chapel is in the village of Roslin in Midlothian and is easily reached from Edinburgh or the Borders. There is a good bus service from Edinburgh city centre (Lothian service 37) and a number of tour companies offer trips to Rosslyn Chapel, leaving from the city centre.
