Roanoke Island Restaurants
If you are looking for fresh seafood, you have come to the right place! No need to dress up around here, even the nicest restaurants are casual. Most do not accept reservations and get very busy in the summer so you might want to avoid peak hours.
O'Neal's is located in the Seafood Industrial Park in the fishing village of Wanchese, located on the southern end of Roanoke Island. It is only open for lunch and closed Sundays. There you will find local seafood not only for lunch but also to purchase fresh seafood from their market. You know it's fresh when you watch them filet the fish. Dog friendly.

Ortega'z is in downtown Manteo and has really good slow cooked meats that they use in their dishes. We like to sit at the wine bar with our backs against the wall for a great overlook of the restaurant. The owners are Chilean and they offer good Chilean wines. Their handmade chips are delicious so add some guacamole and queso dip for a great app for two. Look for the free chips and salsa coupon which you should find in with the menus. The pork nachos are huge so beware if you order as an app. The fish tacos are yummy using local fish. Guy Fieri from Food Network Diners, Drive Ins and Dives recommends them as well. Outdoor seating is available on the porch. Dog friendly.

This is a lively restaurant overlooking Pirate's Cove Marina at the foot of the bridge to Nags Head. Great views, great food. In season, Mimi's Tiki Hut on the lower level is a fun place to have a cocktail and watch the sport fishing vessels come in from the Gulf Stream in the late afternoon.

Olives A Greek Kitchen brings the flavors and foods of Greece to Manteo. The owners, established restaurateurs from New York, offer authentic dishes like tzatziki, hummus, dolmades, saganaki, spanakopita, souvlaki, moussaka, baklava and more. If you're not sure what all that is, don't worry; the menu explains it all very well, and there are hybrid dishes that combine Greek flavors with more familiar foods (Greek Tacos, anyone?). The menu features appetizers, gyros, entrees, pizzas, sides, kids' options and desserts. Seafood, chicken, beef and vegetarian options are available. Be sure to save room for the homemade desserts. This restaurant is in the Waterfront Shops, one flight up from street level, and offers views of Shallowbag Bay and the downtown Manteo waterfront. Outdoor dining on an interior patio is also available. Take-out is available. Beer and wine are served. It is my favorite restaurant in town. The tomato watermelon gazpacho is amazing.

Not located on the Outer Banks but if you are travelling on Hwy. 158 headed on or off the Outer Banks, check out this place. Originally located in Manteo, it was the first microbrewery around, opening in the early 1980s. Owned and operated by a German gentleman, the brew is delicious but the food is also. There is a German butcher there who makes excellent sausages and brats. Definitely worth a stop!

Beach Accesses
The beaches on the Outer Banks are all open to the public. There are a number of public beach accesses along the beach road, Hwy. 12. You can search online for Outer Banks Beach and Sound Accesses to find a listing of them. Please use these accesses and do not trespass on private property. Also, as tempting as it is to climb over the sand dunes, keep in mind that it is restricted because the sand dunes offer protection from ocean flooding. The accesses offer parking and some have restrooms and showers or a faucet to wash the sand off your feet. We like the Limulus access, aka doggy beach, which is at the end of Old Oregon Inlet Road in South Nags Head. Although it does not have bathrooms, if you walk south you are in the Cape Hatteras National Seashore and so no houses there. Also, the Small Street access, MP13, takes you pass the Old Nags Head cottages if you go north on the beach. Particularly good if you have small children is the Jockey's Ridge State Park Road access also at MP13 but on the soundside. This access is very popular so I would suggest going early to get a space in the parking lot. If you park along the road you stand a chance of getting a ticket. The sound waters are much safer than the ocean surf. More accesses I like are Coquina Beach, in the Cape Hatteras National Seashore at MP26, Hargrove in South Nags Head which has showers and bathroom facilities as does Coquina or Holden within walking distance of Hargrove but less crowded usually. Dogs are allowed on the beach on a leash. DO NOT GO IN THE WATER IF THE RED FLAGS ARE FLYING. The rip currents are very strong at times and you can get caught in one. If you do, swim parallel to the beach until you are out of it. Do not try to swim against it. There are lifeguards posted during the summer at some of the busier beach areas, which would be in Nags Head, Kill Devil Hills and Kitty Hawk. The beaches on Hatteras Island and Ocracoke island are unbelievably gorgeous. You may happen upon a loggerhead turtle nesting site which would be an area marked off. Please be careful not to disturb.

Just over the bridge to the beach is the town of Nags Head. To the south is the Cape Hatteras National Seashore and to the north, Kill Devil Hills and then Kitty Hawk. Jockey's Ridge is the largest sand dune on the east coast. It's a great place to climb to the top and check out the amazing views of the ocean and the sound. A lot of kite flying and hang gliding takes place here.
The Oregon Inlet Fishing Center is located on Bodie Island right before you get to the new bridge to Hatteras Island. This is where the sport-fishing vessels come in after going out to the Gulf Stream for the day. If you arrive mid-late afternoon, you will see them arrive one by one and toss out their catch to be counted. It's very fun to watch these local, skilled watermen. You can also arrange to go out on one of these boats to the Gulf Stream or just off shore fishing either by a make-up charter or head boat. A fishing trip to the Gulf Stream is one of the best ways to experience the essence of the Outer Banks.

It was here in 1903 that the Wright Brothers made the first powered, controlled, sustained, heavier-than-air flight that changed our world forever. The words on the monument say it all, "In commemoration of the conquest of the air by the brothers Wilbur and Orville Wright. Conceived by genius. Achieved by dauntless resolution and unconquerable faith".

Nags Head Woods Preserve protects one of the largest remaining maritime forests on the East Coast. Defined as a woodland habitat affected by the ocean, maritime forests such as Nags Head Woods have become increasingly rare due to the pressures of human development throughout coastal environments.

Cape Hatteras National Seashore
If you do not go into the Cape Hatteras National Seashore, you have not seen the Outer Banks. It was our nation's first national seashore park established in 1953 and extends from Nags Head to Ocracoke village. There are villages in the park that existed when the park was opened. The entrance is on highway 12 just south of Nags Head. The beaches are amazing. It is popular for surfers and kite-boarders.
This is the first of three lighthouses that you can see in the Cape Hatteras National Seashore. Built in 1872, this lighthouse is close enough to visit if you are short on time. Bodie Island, (pronounced Body), is just before the Oregon Inlet Fishing Center and no longer an island. The current structure, which was completed in 1872, is one of only a handful of brick tower lighthouses that remain in operation in the United States. Just one of the attractions on the way to Cape Hatteras, Bodie Island is a spectacular lighthouse that is definitely worth the time to stop and enjoy.

Chicamacomico was the first of seven Life-Saving Stations built in North Carolina in 1874 and is one of the most unique historical maritime sites on the East coast. The original building at Chicamacomico, commissioned Dec. 4, 1874, was the first Life-Saving Service staffed in North Carolina. It houses all of the equipment for fundamental Life-Saving Service training, such as drill pole, breeches buoy and cart, a rare life-car and original surfboat.

The Cape Hatteras Lighthouse is the tallest brick lighthouse in our country. Because of the threat of shoreline erosion, it was moved in 1999 to its present location. It is located in the town of Buxton.

Ocracoke Island is accessible only by ferry, private boat or airplane. The state of North Carolina operates a free ferry from Hatteras Village. The ferry ride is beautiful and takes about an hour each way. Go to ncferry for current information and schedules. Ocracoke Island is worth a day trip but be prepared for a long day. My suggestion is to leave early before the ferry line gets long and bring a cooler with drinks and food.
