São Lourenço Palace, located at a strategic defence point on the island (Avenida Zarco), is considered the most imposing example of civil and military architecture on the island of Madeira. Construction of the palace began in the first half of the 16th century and was completed during the Spanish dynasty that ruled Portugal between 1580 and 1640. São Lourenço Fortress and Palace was classified as national monument in 1943, and in 1976, when the autonomous system of government was established, it became the official residence of the Minister of the Republic. In 2006 it was renamed the Official Residence of the Representative of the Republic for the Autonomous Region of Madeira.

Initially called São João Fortress, the name was changed to São Filipe and then to São Miguel. It was later restored to its original name. Located in the city centre, the Cathedral was built in the reign of Dom Manuel and features characteristics of Manueline and Gothic style. Its facade, divided in three panels, has a beautiful Gothic portal in the central panel, composed by ashlar from Cabo Girão. The Gothic portal features eight archivolts with pointed arches, giving an unique look to the entrance. Over the years the Cathedral acquired new features, making it an artistic miscegenation example. The ceiling is an outstanding example of Mudejar décor, made in island’s cedar wood, requiring special attention, as well as the choir chairs of the chancel.

The Cabo Girão viewpoint, situated on the highest promontory in Europe, at an elevation of 580 m, offers a vertiginous view of the fajãs of Rancho and Cabo Girão – small areas of cultivated land at the foot of the cliff – as well as magnificent panoramic views over the ocean and the municipalities of Câmara de Lobos and Funchal. This parish has a unique location on the island of Madeira, situated in a deep valley, which resembles the crater of a volcano but which owes its appearance only to heavy erosion. The name of this parish comes from a curious situation that is believed to have occurred around 1560. When the nuns of the Convent of Santa Clara fled from the Lutheran French pirates who invaded the island and sacked the city of Funchal, they found this place hidden in the mountains to be the ideal shelter. Curral da Freiras, is one of the few places on the island that is not visible from the sea and so it is more protected and of difficult access.

A gothic construction with “alfarge” knotwork ceilings in Moorish-influenced Mudejar style, it was ordered to be built around 1519 and underwent several modifications during the 17th and 18th centuries. In 1982, works began to restore and adapt the structure to accommodate the Legislative Assembly of the Autonomous Region of Madeira. Architect Chorão Ramalho was in charge of the project. The work was completed five years later in December 1987. A statue by the Madeiran sculptor Amândio Sousa entitled “Trilogy of Powers” was placed in the patio next to the chapel.
