Guidebook for San Miguel de Allende

Food Scene
San Miguel has so many great places to eat. Here we are just listing those we visit most often and can recommend. As I am a chef and cook most of the time here at home I by no means represent here all there is in San Miguel but use Tripadvisor in this area to get a feel for all SMA has to offer. It's a true foodie destination in Mexico
If your checking out Atotonilco, this is a fun place to stop in for lunch.

The location of Nirvana is superb. Outside of town with the most lovely gardens and the perfect place to catch lunch or dinner. It has an extensive menu and watching the light change from day to early evening is very peaceful.

This place is one of our favorite when in town. Fresh food, well prepared and you just can't beat the view of La Parroquia. Reservations are highly recommended. The Tempura sweet potatoes, the black pasta with shrimp, the pork the octopus the salads are all very good. I've not had a bad meal here yet. You really should make reservations to ensure a seat and if the inside is a MUST, be sure to specify. There is a smaller area inside as it is mostly rooftop dining so space inside is limited.

This is the dining room at Rosewood. We typically go there for special occasions when we want perfect service and a quieter environment. The only dish I would not recommend is the grilled meats as although it is very Mexican in style, its just average in my opinion. The soups and salads and all other dishes are predictably delicious and the atmosphere is relaxing with a very attentive but, not lurking staff. Be sure to check out the Luna roof-top bar for the best city view in San Miguel. Live music on Thursday evenings at Luna bar

I enjoy the ambiance here and the menu, although a bit eclectic, offers something for almost everyone including vegetarians and Vegans. In the winter there is a fireplace that keeps it warm and the Margaritas are good. There is parking right across the street which is convenient or if it's full another one just around the corner. My husband always gets the chicken pot pie and I lean towards the cauliflower. The staff is friendly and they server fresh baked bread and desserts daily.

I love this place for the variety and cozy environment. It's just inside the Fabrica Aurora at the end of the row to the left of the entrance. The menu offers something for everyone and the owner is Condon Bleu trained. Open till 10 at night.

OK, so I'd say finding a good pizza will always be very tough as we all have our own definition of a ¨good Pizza. Joe the owner is from New York and a family run business with his father before coming to San Miguel. He makes a great pizza and will deliver to our house up until 9 PM. We have menus if you are interested or stop by his place and enjoy the casual and very New York style ambiance.

Lunch or breakfast combined with all the great local produce, cheeses and other locally crafted gifts. This is a very casual and healthful option for all. DOwnstairs is more of the market but don't overlook Alicias juice bar the Blend Boutique. Upstairs is more food places and the small pocket theater offing current movies should you be looking for a comfortable afternoon matinee.

Oh, what would I do without Luna de Queso?? Terrific sandwiches and breakfast options as well as gourmet cheese offerings as well as deli meats and an amazing array of olives. I sometimes JUST HAVE to go to get a sandwich. It's a casual favorite for me always!! There is another store in the center on Jesus in case you want to pick up some cheese and cracker to have while you watch the sunset from our home. La Chispa!

I adore this small absolutely charming restaurant. My friend Chef Ana Lilia Galindo serves up a globe-spanning menu. French inspired but with influences from Asia as well as Mexico it has the most charming feel. The artichoke soup is to die for and her rendition of escargot is brilliant. The Thai spring rolls are wonderful and I think the only thing I would not get is the 1/2 chicken but that's because I seldom eat out to have roast chicken. It's good but I just find most roast chicken dishes to be a bit blah when I can make it at home so easily. That said, I love Ana Lilia and her food reflects her commitment to making her guests feel at home and special.

This restaurant tucked away on one of the coolest streets of the Centro but, at the end away from town offer up Yucatan style food. Careful of the hottest hot sauce as it is made from Hanañeros and is smoking hot. I have enjoyed most all my dishes except for the soups. My husband loves them but I am picky about the base stock and think they use mostly Swiss Knore powered bases and so to me they all taste the same. The gardens are spectacular and they have live music on Saturdays afternoons

https://www.santuariodeatotonilco.org/el-santuario-de-atotonilco/el-santuario-de-jesus-nazareno/ It's just fascinating and so beautifully restored. Sometimes referred to as the Sistine Chapel of Mexico this small sanctuary is rich in history and supposedly you could be resolved a mortal sin if you confessed here. Whatever your beliefs are it is a wonderful place to visit and weekdays are a bit less crowded than the weekend and especially religious holidays. If you time your visit right you could have lunch at Nirvana or Coyote Flaco.

This is a fabulous art institute that offers a perfect look at the older architecture that exists just behind the doors of many older homes in San Miguel. It often has exhibits or various arts as well as classes and traditional Mexican stylized murals.
