Kiyamachi, Kyoto's biggest nightlife spot, is a one kilometre stretch running parallel to the central Kamo River between two main boulevards, Sanjō and Shijō. On one side of the narrow street, slick-fronted concept restaurants promise cheap drinks and no cover charge. On the other, a shallow, tree-lined canal is laced by arched bridges. It sounds romantic, but the strip is nothing in comparison to Ponto-chō, just one block over.

Sightseeing

The main street of Gion. Hanamikoji Dori is a street not to be missed, especially in the evening when it looks beautiful when the lanterns are lit up. We were hoping to catch a glimpse of a Geisha here and we thought we were lucky

Sannenzaka and Ninenzakaare two of Kyoto's most attractive streets, a pair of gently sloping lanes that lead down from Kiyomizu-dera Temple toward Nene-no-Michi Lane. Lined with beautifully restored traditional shophouses and blissfully free of the overhead power lines that mar the rest of Kyoto

Kiyomizu-dera is one of Kyoto's most popular and most enjoyable temples. It may not be a tranquil refuge, but it represents the favoured expression of faith in Japan. It was built at the end of the 8th century. The main hall was constructed in the 17th century, and is famous for its location overhanging a cliff. The platform of the main hall, which is supported by 139 giant pillars, affords a spectacular view of the town of Kyoto. It is designated a National Treasure
