City Diner has a wonderful 'Old School' feel. This location is open late. I have gone for breakfast & late night (post bar visits). This restaurant has a nice mixture of the local residents.

The Saint Louis Zoo is one of the best in the nation. Most of the Zoo is free, there are parts that charge but if you get there early enough you are able to access these areas without charge (native secret!).
