Shopping

Mercado (Market 23) is a local market that is very close to the house. I recommend a nice early morning walk (35-40 min) to the market to beat the heat and the crowds. Or you can take a taxi (7 min) for 35-40 pesos. The market has all kinds of local foods like meat, cheese, fish as well as many restaurants where you can try some Munudo, Tortas, Tacos, agua fresca, fresh squeezed juices and much more. There are many different kinds of shops and can be a good place to find a nice unique souvenir.

Plaza Las Americas is a modern day shopping mall with all the retail/food stores like any other mall in the US. There is a Cinepolis (movie theatre) and a huge Chedraui Supermarket. Also there is a nice food court with many different options from Pizza Hut, McDonalds, Burger King, Olive Garden, Johnny Rocket, Sushi, Chinese Food, Hooters, Mexican Food, Salad Bar, Starbucks and much more! You can take a taxi there for only 45-55 pesos.

Plaza Bonita is a charming little place located within Market 28. Colorful colonial city facades and forged-iron balconies line the plaza. With a dizzying array of shops you’ll find everything from souvenirs to hand-sewn dolls, and much more. And when you’re ready for a break from shopping, stop by one of the many restaurants or grab a flavorful ice cream treat.

Find exactly what you’re looking for in this labyrinth of shops. Market 28 is the biggest flea market in Cancun, so if you’re looking for something unique, you’re bound to find it here. When you first enter this maze-like complex you’ll notice countless rows of vendors selling everything from jewelry to pottery and much more. There’s also a large food court with a wide variety of restaurants serving authentic Mexican food that will whet your appetite. I prefer Market 23 because here the shop owners are pushy trying to get you to come in their store and the souvenirs are very touristy. Market 23 is more local.

Arts & Culture

About a 1000 years ago this site was used by the Mayan people. In fact this temple complex was part of hundreds in Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula. All of the Mayan sites were linked by trade and some were pilgrimage sites of worship. At El Rey you are allowed to walk among the 47 structures. Some of these structures are just foundations and others are more intact. It will take about 20-30 minutes to walk around. The ruins are mostly in the sun and you might want to bring a sun hat or umbrella. There are bathrooms at the entrance. You can take the R1 bus straight here from the bus stop near the house.

Food Scene

This is one of my favorite places to eat some food and have some beers or margaritas! This is a good all around surf and turf kind of place that has everything from shrimp tacos, to burgers with excellent guacamole. The most budget friendly and tasty menu item here is definitely the Tuna Tostadas coming in hot at only $39 pesos each. Beers are $35 pesos each. You can use a credit card or cash but the servers can sometimes be pushy about tips. Standard tip for restaurants here is usually 10-15% if the service was good.

This is a great local neighborhood restaurant that serves breakfast and lunch. The food is very traditional Mexican style like what you would find in your average mexican home. For breakfast I recommend the Chilaquiles, juevos rancheros, juevos divorciados and they will cook your eggs any way you like. Breakfast comes with toast! The coffee and Orange juice is good. For Lunch I recommend the enchiladas, taquitos and i cant remember what else they have but its all very tasty!.

If you like real fresh seafood, this is the place you need to go! Expect to pay more for this freshness but it is definitely worth paying a bit more. The restaurant is a seafood market also! Good for special occasions like birthday or anniversary lunch. Yes lunch because the fresh fish sells out fast! Get there no later than 3pm. I recommend getting the shrimp cooked 3 ways, grilled octopus, oysters raw or fried, and the seafood soup is delicious.

One of my favorite taco joints!! Tacos are different than most you will find in Cancun but they are so good! Dont forget to get the fried cheese toppings that take these tacos out of this world!

This place has amazing seafood! So fresh and good! It is a little pricey but not unreasonable for what you get. This is one of the closest "nice" beach restaurant places close to the house. You can relax in your private palapa with bed here and the water is very calm and nice. You need to take a taxi here or one of the small collectivo white vans. You can hop on any one of them thats heading in that direction.

Good Tacos, seafood, Micheladas and more. Nice atmosphere and close to other bars so you can hop around for some cocktails if youd like.

Everything Else

Isla Mujeres is a MUST if you are staying here in Cancun. Isla Mujeres has one of the BEST beaches in the world! Go to the island and just get lost and see what you can find. Most of the beaches and shops are on the north side of the island. And there are many different beach bars/restaurants that you can rent a beachside table, bed or umbrella to enjoy your meal and drinks. I recommend the beach bar called Phoenix Lounge. It is a good fun place to spend the day at the beach there on the island but there are so many more! You can also rent golfcarts there for $50-$60 Dollars for the day. With a golfcart you can travel to the south end of the island for some sight seeing!

This is a public beach that is in the kilometer 2 of the hotel zone. The sea is very calm, ideal for snorkeling. There are bathrooms, showers, a playground for kids and a small parking lot. There are also palapas that you can relax at and order food and drinks.

This is a cool and fun beach club that I like to go to sometimes! It is super easy to get to from the R1 bus! You have to spend a minimum of $500 but you get your own bed or palapa to enjoy your drinks and food! They also have a pool and DJ. This place can at times be a fun party or relaxing due to the season you visit. If you dont want to pay for a palapa you can just find a spot on the beach somewhere and bring your own drinks and food.
