Playa Cabana Hacienda

This is the sister restaurant to Playa Cabana just two minute walk from each other. La Hacienda is a three storey house with a large patio. It is a fun and lively place with a similar menu to the other restaurant perhaps a slight variation.
Fabulous Mexican food. The fish tacos are my favourite as well as the sugar free margaritas. It's small and can be a bit tight for seating but it's well worth it. Sister restaurant, Playa Cabana Hacienda is just down the road.

The atmosphere is wonderful. Outstanding rooftop patio. All Italian. Food is great, wine is great. It's just a neat place to hang out. Totally neighbourhood. Check out other Terroni locations. Perfect place to bring children in a sophisticated but relaxed atmosphere.

One of the best burgers in town, prime beef burger, tofu cheese burger. It is on the second floor of a building opposite the Royal Ontario Museum. The atmosphere is french bistro, there is an outdoor patio looking down on to Bloor street and the museum. They have happy hour. It's very charming.

This is the closest grocery store to the apartment. It can be a nice walk, about 15 minutes, or take a bus ride, 4 minutes, or if you have rented a bike from the city of Toronto to carry some groceries, it's an easy way to get around. There is everything one needs for sustenance including a café, florist and wine shop.

Parks & Nature

If you are at the top of Casa Loma, walk north (away from the city) and you will come to the park. This too has a lovely view of the city. There are tennis courts, playground, dog park, walking/jogging circle, biking trail, nature trail and is connected to a trail that crosses the upper areas of Toronto.

The Toronto Islands are such a cool place to go. Just at the base of the city and a short ferry ride across to the island. There are three ferries you can take to the three different islands - Centre, Ward and Hanlan's Point. Centre island is the main attraction, fun for the whole family. There are small rides for kids and adults, restaurants, picnic areas, bike rentals, hiking trails, beaches including the nude beach at Hanlan's point, a short walk from Centre island. Ward's island has wonderful little cottages either inhabited all year round or vacation homes for Torontonians. It includes a frizbee golf course, beautiful hiking and board walks along the south shore of Lake Ontario.

Arts & Culture

Not only does the university have incredible historic buildings, it is surrounded by museums - Rom, Gardiner ceramic and Bata shoe, just to name a few as well as parks, trails, Queens Park, the Legislative assembly, restaurants, shopping and so much more. It's a 15-20 minute walk from the house. Once in the area it becomes your own discovery zone.

I have to be honest, I haven't been to the ROM since the reconstruction of the building. I truly was sad that they built that monstrosity of ackward glass jutting out of the beautiful century old building that was my childhood memories into adulthood. Many a family and school trips as well as my children went to the museum kids camp in the summer. However it is busier than ever and people seem to like it. Plus there are always amazing exhibits and as always the great dinosaurs! and the infamous bat cave. I will go one day and I hope you do too!

Getting Around

Whenever I go to a big city one of the first things I do is hop on a city sightseeing bus. It is the best way to figure out the city before the actual exhausted walking around for hours not knowing where you are going at times. Plus it gives you an insight to the city's history and places to be and places that you've never hear of or have seen before and a visual perspective on where you might like to stop and hang out. You can hop on and off for 48 hours.

The Eaton Centre

The Eaton Centre The Iconic Eaton Centre. One of the busiest malls in Canada. Right in the heart of it all. Three storey's of glorious shopping. It is on the subway lines either at Dundas Street or Queen Street and is right next to City Hall.
Yorkdale mall is on the Dupont subway station line just five stops north at Yorkdale station. It has become a very popular and busy mall with the increase of many popular stores. I like it because it's on one main floor, no going up or down a few flights. If you have a car, there is ample free parking. It's extremely busy on the weekends.
