Their cheese scones are the best things ever, especially when they are warm. And they are right across from Ooak Gallery, which has the best collection of local artwork, and ceramics, in the area.

It's pretty cool that Burnsville now has a brewery right in town! There are tons of patios and space to enjoy food and drink.

This is a great bar and restaurant-- next to the Garden Deli Cafe. You can think of the Garden Deli Cafe as a daytime stop for easy eats, and Snap Dragon as it's more sophisticated nighttime partner.

I'm not sure I've ever had as good, or as giant, a sandwich than at this Amish Country Store. It takes a little time for them to make it, but I have never been disappointed. Also want to wow the kids with candy? This has a whole wall of clear-bag wrapped old fashion candies, as well as tons of bulk goods and spices.

This is a wonderful coffee shop with pastries and great coffee. Rated #1 of restaurants in Burnsville, it's charming and there are seats outside as well.

We love love love this place. We don't spend as much time in Spruce Pine as in Burnsville, but we make a point to stop here as often as we can to support this sweet family and their yummy food and delicious coffee drinks. Our kids have especially enjoyed getting hot chocolate then we go park on Locust street and taking the walk over the Spruce Pine Foot Bridge and back.

This is the highest peak east of the Mississippi, and has an awesome 360 viewing platform, great ranger-led walks, and so many trails to explore, all up on the peak!

This runs all along the South Toe River, and locals and visitors alike love to enjoy the views of the water from any access or trail. This place is also a campsite, but in the right weather you can also swim and rent tubes to tube down the river. SO much fun!

This is one of our family's favorite hikes-- it's easy with kids (or without) and the waterfall at the end of the one mile (at the most) hike is so beautiful, you'll want to sit and stay a while. The more adventurous can go up to the right of the falls to climb further.

It's an unbelievably beautiful stretch of road (much closer to 80 than the pin shows) that has so many overlooks to picnic or stop on for breathtaking views.

This trail is wonderful, and is a giant loop, closer to 3 miles, with many rock stairs to climb up and down. The falls are gigantic! It's a good hike when you'd like to do a little more work, but it's also bigger kid friendly (depends on the kids!).

The photo included here is from Grassy Creek Falls, one of our favorite hikes. Little Switzerland has a wonderful bookshop, great restaurant and a general store, all packed into one little curve in the mountains. There are a few ways to get there from our place-- including heading there from 7 Mile Ridge Road (if you want the wiggliest drive possible) or going through Spruce Pine and around. We love going there, getting lunch, then going on the spectacular Grassy Creek Falls hike-- only about a mile. Downhill in, so uphill back, but so beautiful.

Arts & Culture

There is also a Toe River Arts Council in Spruce Pine-- it's worth it to check out the amazing local artists. No matter where you stay, you are surrounded by the Toe River Artists, and there are tours of their studios to keep your eyes out for.

There is an incredible Art Gallery here, at the entrance of this beautiful Artist Residency campus. Take a walk around, tour the gorgeous art studios, stop at their cafe, and enjoy the incredible views from any number of porches.

This is a local art store, hooked to Maples, that always wins my heart. There are soooo many different mediums of art for sale here, from two giant walls full of local ceramic artists work-- to hand carved hiking sticks, to beautiful jewelry, to wildly creative lamps, to printmaking. They have it all, and live music many nights!

Next to Books and Beans, there is also a restaurant and general store. It seems like it's always pretty busy, because it's all packed into one curve in the road, but it's really charming, and such a great spot for a quick day drive! We enjoy making it take longer by going there or back on the Blue Ridge Parkway, and hiking to Grassy Creek Falls.
