Food Scene

Great daily brunch menu until 3pm. Saturday and Sunday brunch is generally very busy. They don't take reservations, but you can usually call ahead and have your name put on the waiting list. They have a decent overall menu, nice atmosphere, and daily drink specials. It has been a staple in the Annex for many years.

Delicious Mexican food. Yes the tacos are pricey, but trust me, they are worth it. Great atmosphere with fun neon lights and a small heated patio. The margarita's are also to die for. If it is busy, check out the sister restaurant, just down the road at Dupont and Davenport.

Sister restaurant to Playa Cabana Hacienda. I recommend Hacienda first (better atmosphere), but if it is busy, this is always a good back up plan (they are literally a 2 minute walk from each other). Both are about a 5-10 minute walk from the apartment.

This is not so much a cafe as the name suggests, more of a restaurant. It is the new location since the old one was demolished behind Honest Eds in order to make room for condos. Great patio for people watching. Good wood burning pizza, and wide selection of craft beers.

Go here. Just do it! You won't regret it. This is a good restaurant if you want to go for a something a little on the high end side. The atmosphere is what I would call "hipster chef" (exposed stone, wood, Edison bulb lighting and succulents). On Mondays they have a prix fix menu for I believe $40 a person which is a good deal. The food is mostly meant for sharing a few plates. Everything I have tried here has been incredible. TIP: avoid the brunch, it is nothing special for the price. Go to Insomnia if you are looking for a good brunch.

A great little gem on Harbord. Nice patio, good atmosphere. Small but delicious menu (get the rib appetizer and the homemade pretzels with a cider cheese sauce!). They have a huge selection of Ontario Ciders on draft that you can not get in the LCBO. In addition to that they have pages of interesting ciders from all over the world. The staff here are amazing. They are super knowledgeable and make great suggestions of how to pair a variety of ciders with food.

Parks & Nature

A nice park in Koreatown with big hills. On Sunday nights in the summer they show movies outdoors on a large screen. Bring your blanket and enjoy a park in the city! There is also a public pool at this park, but be warned, it is very busy in the summer.

A nice park to go for a walk. It is a parliament building with nice Victorian architecture. Good spot for a picnic or to go for a jog.

Drinks & Nightlife

Warning - I would NOT eat here. It is just your standard pub grub that is sub par. Don't waste your time when there are so many other great places to eat in the neighbourhood. However, it is a great place to go for some drink specials on the rooftop patio.

Looking for live music? Check out who is playing at Lee's palace. This place has been a staple in the Annex for many years. Generally hosts some local acts and punk rock or indie artists from around the world. Only wish I was around when Nirvana played there.

Great place to catch an interesting live show after dinner. You never know what you are going to get at the Tranzac. This is not a late night head banging type of music venue. If you are looking for that, head to Lee's Palace, or down to Queen street. The Tranzac is a quaint little place that hosts a lot of local (and international) folk artists, jazz, blue grass, and everything that is weird and wonderful. It is not usually a packed house, so don't be intimidated if you don't see many people in the front room. Pop in, grab a beer or glass of wine and enjoy some local artists. You will almost always see/hear something interesting.

Entertainment & Activities

This place is still just "Bloor Cinema" to me. However the recent sponsors have meant that they have been able to renovate the theatre a bit. If you are here during the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) in early September, make sure that you get a ticket ahead of time to see a show. Otherwise you can usually catch great documentaries and interesting independent films at this theatre. It does not show the latest action hero blockbuster type of films. There is a bar in the theatre and interesting two-tiered balcony seats.
