Istiklal Avenue is one of the most well known streets in Istanbul, in the historic Beyoğlu area. It is an pedestrian street. When combined with the side streets, one can find music stores, bookstores, art galleries, cafés, pubs, night clubs with live music, patisseries and restaurants in this area. Unfortunately in recent years the area is turning more and more into a big shopping mall, but that also might be convenient for people who want to shop while sight seeing at the same time.

Arts & Culture

The Istanbul Museum of Modern Art is Turkey’s first private museum to organize modern and contemporary art exhibitions. Don't have too high expectations, but it certainly can give you an idea about local modern art. The cafe is expensive but is a nice spot for looking out on the Golden Horn with a cup of tea.

Parks & Nature

Belgrad Forest is about 15 kilometers outside of Istanbul. Covering approx. 5,000 hectares of land, the forest is home to many plant, bird and animal species. Shaded by birch, elm, oak, pine and spruce trees, it is also a popular recreational area for residents of Istanbul. The forest has much historical importance. In past centuries there were many reservoirs that supplied water to Istanbul. Several reservoirs remain today, some dating as far back as the 15th century. A visit to the forest is a great way to escape the tourist crowds of Istanbul and enjoy a bit of fresh air, but it is crowded in the weekends.
