Clovelly is located 10 miles west of Westward Ho!, just off the A39. It is a traditional Devon village with a cobbled High Street and picturesque 14th century quay. We would suggest only visiting in dry weather, as the cobbles can be slippery when wet. Also, please note that the streets are quite steep and not suitable for wheelchairs. There is an admission fee to the village, once you park in the main car park, make your way to the visitor centre and this is the point to pay and access the village.

The large green expanse you can see from Ocean Wave at the back of the beach is called the Northam Burrows Country Park. This is a great place to go for a walk. To get there, walk through the village and out behind the Go Karting and you will find yourself on the Burrows. You can walk along the back of the pebble ridge all the way across to the Taw and Torridge River Estuary and loop round over the sand dunes and back into the village. The Northam Burrows are an area of around 700 acres of salt marshes, grasslands and dunes. This Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) is rich in flora and fauna and is a good spot to see migratory birds.

City/town information

On the opposite bank of the estuary to Appledore, Instow is a small village with a sandy estuary beach, backed by sand dunes. You will find several nice eateries there, including the Instow Arms (modern pub food) and the Boathouse (Seafood Restaurant). We would recommend booking a table in season, as it tends to get busy. There is free on road parking and there is also a pay and display car park.

The largest town in North Devon is Barnstaple on the River Taw. This ancient town was granted its charter in 930 AD by King Aethelstan - the grandson of Alfred the Great. The oldest surviving part of town is the Norman mound and remnants of the original Norman castle wall can still be seen. There is also the ornate Queen Anne’s Walk and the 13th century Long Bridge. There are plenty of shopping opportunities including the Pannier Market as well as places to eat, both chain and independent. Pannier Market days are themed as follows: Tuesday, Friday and Saturday: General market - Fresh local produce, flowers, clothing, footwear, books, prints, crafts, and much more. Open all year round. Mondays and Thursdays: Craft and general - A variety of stalls from general goods to local crafts Monday: open April-Christmas, Thursday: open all year round Wednesdays: Antiques and collectables Open all year round

A little further afield (approx 50 min drive from Westward Ho!) but definitely worth a visit are Lynton and Lynmouth. There is a cliff railway (built in 1888) that links the two towns. If you park in Lynton, you can take a walk around town and then take the cliff railway into Lynton with its beach and harbour. A small charge applies to obtain a return ticket on the railway.

Lundy Island lies 10 miles of the coast of North Devon and can be seen on the horizon from Westward Ho!. It is a three mile long island with an abundance of birds (incl puffins), seals, three lighthouses, a castle and much more. It’s a lovely place for long walks exploring the flora and fauna. There is also a pub on the island and some places to buy refreshments but it may be an idea to pack a picnic too. To get there, take the MS Oldenburg to Lundy Island which takes approx 2 hours. It departs from Bideford Quay (see latest timetable online). It’s a fairly large boat so quite steady even if seas are a bit choppy. But if you think you may get sea-sick, we would recommend avoiding doing this on a day with rough seas. Runs March to October.

Tide times

The beach at Westward Ho! varies a lot, depending on whether it is high or low tide. Make sure to check out tide times. If you want to dig in the sand with the little ones or go rock pooling, aim for 1-2 hours before high tide and you'll have a good day of it.
