Sightseeing

Historically the Upper Castle of Prague. A stone fort on rock overlooking the Vltava river, that served as the seat of the rulers of Bohemia during the middle ages. It was probably built in the 10th century. Inside the fort are the Basilica of St. Peter and St. Paul and the Vyšehrad Cemetery, containing the remains of many famous Czech artists, writers, and poets, such as Antonín Dvořák, Bedřich Smetana, Karel Čapek, and Alphonse Mucha. It also contains Prague's oldest Rotunda of St. Martin, from the 11th century.

This is the location where the municipality of Prague 2 holds the annual Christmas markets, and Easter Markets. Also during the year many events, and open air art exhibitions take place here. In the summer with it is well kept gardens, the square is a nice oasis to enjoy the summer afternoons. Around the square there are many restaurants, pubs and cafes. It is also a major transportation hub, with Tram and metro lines. The metro station on Line A with the same name, with its 53 metres below the surface platform, is the deepest metro station in the European Union, and has the longest escalators (length 87 m, vertical span 43.5 m, 533 steps, taking 2 minutes and 21 seconds to ascend or 2 minutes 19 seconds to descend without walking).
