Very big, natural history museum.
The American Museum of Natural History (abbreviated as AMNH), located on the Upper West Side of Manhattan, New York City, is one of the largest museums in the world. Located in park-like grounds across the street from Central Park, the museum complex comprises 28 interconnected buildings housing 45 permanent exhibition halls, in addition to a planetarium and a library. The museum collections contain over 130 million specimens of plants, humans, animals, fossils, minerals, rocks, meteorites, and human cultural artifacts, of which only a small fraction can be displayed at any given time, and occupies more than 2,000,000 square feet (190,000 m2).

Closed to the public for most of its history, Governors Island has undergone a major transformation for the future. Now a lively and loved destination, Governors Island is home to a dynamic mix of arts and cultural programming, not-for-profit and educational tenants and a spectacular, award-winning park. With the opening of the next phase of park, The Hills, opening in 2016, the Island’s transformation continues. Rising 70 feet above sea-level, the Hills will allow hundreds of thousands of visitors to enjoy breathtaking never-before-seen views of the Statue of Liberty and New York Harbor. With the Hills, the Island is poised for its next chapter of activity.

Park that is 1.5 miles away from our apartment. We run there with our dog. There is a walking bridge up at 103rd st. Enter the walking path at Carl Schurz park at 84th St and the river.
Called Ward Island because of the Psyc Ward that is closing down, but currently still in use. Don't fret, the patients are behind fences.

Ellis Island, in Upper New York Bay, was the gateway for over 12 million immigrants to the United States as the nation's busiest immigrant inspection station from 1892 until 1954. The island was greatly expanded with land reclamation between 1892 and 1934.
It is about 10 degrees colder than anywhere on Manhattan, so bring a jacket!

You can pay to go up to the top of the Statue. Or you can ride the Statin Island Ferry for free! The Ferry passes very closely to the Statue of Liberty, giving you plenty of great photo ops.
