truly a sky island, the drive is curvy with incredible views and dozens of scenic pull offs. the town at the top is charming with 2 restaurants and various shops. You will be in a ponderosa pine forest in less than hour from here, the temperature is 20-30° cooler! the southernmost ski area in the USA can be found at the top, with chair lifts running in the summertime for a ride to the 9000' peak with many trails to hike, year round.

go for a walk south on Tanque Verde loop road to the Tanque Verde creek crossing and walk along the sandy wash for a great workout. recommend only early am and early evenings in the summertime. Raging water may flow in the monsoon season so use your judgement!
