The truly enchanted world of Puzzlewood in the historic Forest of Dean has something for everyone; our children adore exploring the paths, bridges and lookout points scattered amongst the ancient trees. I don’t think we could beat their own write up which describes it as “an inspiration for authors and storytellers, where Stormtroopers and Time Lords have rubbed shoulders with dragons and unicorns.“

A number of companies offer canoe hire on the River Wye, we’ve personally used the excellent Canoe the Wye Ltd. Various routes are available with tuition and all safety equipment provided. It is a wonderful experience for the whole family and early booking is a necessity, especially in the Summer months.

Canoe the Wye
A number of companies offer canoe hire on the River Wye, we’ve personally used the excellent Canoe the Wye Ltd. Various routes are available with tuition and all safety equipment provided. It is a wonderful experience for the whole family and early booking is a necessity, especially in the Summer months.
In the Forest of Dean you’ll find Go Ape with courses suitable for all ages and abilities. If you’re feeling brave and a bit of an adrenaline junkie there is the Treetop Challenge at Mallards Pike, or if you would prefer the beginner course or have younger children the Treetop Adventure at Beechenhurst is just the right amount of dare with plenty of scary moments!

We love a trip to Ross Garden Store. They have a beautiful selection of plants and the Engine Shed Cafe is great for coffee and cake.

The Man of Ross Inn at the top of the road does a fantastic fish and chips at the weekend, get there early because it's very popular!

The King’s Head Hotel has a cosy bar which serves Wye Valley Brewery’s superb Butty Bach Ale, as well as a quiet ‘library’ where you can while away the hours with a good book and a large cappuccino.

We regularly go up to The Royal Hotel at the top of the hill where they have an excellent everyday food and drink menu. What makes this place really special is the panoramic views of the River Wye and surrounding countryside from the terrace.

A family favourite is The Loughpool in Sellack which is a 10 minute drive from the cottage towards Hereford. This impressive black and white timbered pub is surrounded by the stunning Herefordshire countryside and serves exceptional food based on a seasonal menu.
