Our closest restaurant is the South Park Saloon. A great, divey bar and restaurant where you can watch sports and enjoy the most incredible pot pie of your life. Pro tip: get the classic chicken. The pizza is also amazing and the owner, Anouk, is a Master Chef out of New York.

Right in the middle of Alma is a can't miss food truck. Open for breakfast, lunch and dinner - you will love this meal. I would snag it when you're planning a dinner at Blue Ski Lodge but cooking seems like a task. As far as sanwhiches go, I love the breakfast brioche and the BLT with a fried chicken topper. Also, the sweet potato fries with the icing dipping sauce (mouth is watering) and the cajun fries with aioli sauce. Heck, get one of everything!

One of our favorite places to grab a bite in Breckenridge is Motherloaded Tavern. We love the cheese curds and meatloaf. And their hot bevies are delicious too!

City/town information

Breckenridge is 25 minutes through Hoosier Pass from the house. In sketchy weather, plan to go slow and give yourself 30-40 minutes to get to your destination. Main Street Main Street is a wonderful place to end up with no plan. The bars, shops and restaurants will keep you busy for hours. Breckenridge Mountain Don't miss one of the best ski and snowboarding mountains in the country. It's a fantastic mountain for beginners and experts alike. We like to park at the gondola garage and take the yellow or brown line bus to Beaver Run. Apres at TBar, the Maggie, Cabin Juice or Robbie's. Breckenridge Distillery If you plan ahead and have time to make a reservation, definitely check out the distillery and enjoy a delicious meal and incredible whiskey-based cocktails. They also have a little shop where you can find merch and branded booze. Other places we love: MoutherLoad for cheese curds and meatloaf. Rootstalk for a nice dinner out (reservation required / hard to get into during busy season). Also, Breckenridge Brewery is a classic spot with decent food, lots of space, games on the TV and delicious brews. Shopping Recs: Women's Goods / Home Furnishings: Marigolds, Beloved Boutique, Ruby Jane, Valley Girl, Moxie Ski / Rentals: Christi's Sports, Racer's Edge, Underground Snowboards, AMR Rentals General: Christmas Store, Fuzziwig's Candy Shop, Spice Merchants Breck, Global Candle Store

Fairplay is a cute, small town with some interesting things to do. This is the town that inspired the South Park tv show so go and be a tourist for a few hours! Many go to Fairplay for fishing and hiking / biking in Summer but there are few great restaurants and bars. We love to take folks into Fairplay for one evening since it's close to Blue Ski Lodge (10 mins) and the nightlife is a small town saloon vibe. Fairplay is also home to the closest grocery store: Prather's Market. The prices are high, but so is the quality of their food and produce. You can find many vegan and GF options which is nice for a small town grocery :) . For cheaper grocery shopping, your best bet is City Market in Breckenridge. For Restaurants Java Moose is a delicious breakfast and coffee shop. I love the sausage burrito and a warm cinnamon roll. For Bars The Saloon has good food and get hopping around 9p. Park Bar also has good food and it's usually a battle to see if locals are at Park Bar or the Saloon. We like them both. The Distillery (delicious whiskey-based cocktails) but does not serve food. For Entertainment The South Park Museum will keep you busy and entertained for a couple of hours.

The Highest Incorporated Town in Colorado! This is a cute little hang out spot with just a few things to do. Must-sees include Kite Lake, at a crisp 12,400 feet, the ghost town of Buckskin Joe and Alma's spooky cemetery. The four-wheel-drive Mosquito Pass, the highest motor-vehicle pass in North America, above Alma is the area’s most popular summer attraction. Alma is also home to a restaurant bar, “South Park Saloon” a liquor store, “Hoosier Daddy Liquors” two dispensaries, “High Country Healing 2” and “Northern Standard” a food truck “Ottos Food Cart” sitting next to a produce cart, “Kiki’s Peak Produce,” a few shops with locally made gifts and locally crafted goods, “The Sheepherder,” “Organsky Woodworks” and “Big Nipper’s Mining & Mercantile” a hair salon, “Hairy Situations,” a garden center, “Mountain Grown Gardens” and, of course, the famous “Al-Mart General Store!”

Fishing in Park County is one of the best places to find trout in Colorado; catch rainbow, brown, native cutthroat, brook, cutbow, snake river fine-spotted cutthroat, and splake trout everywhere you find water in Park County. Fairplay is known as The Trout Capital of Colorado; the middle section of the South Platte River has Gold Medal Fishing. Here are the public fishing spots: Teter-Michigan Creek State Wildlife Area - Located about 5-miles north of Jefferson off CR 37, Jefferson Lake has no boating access. Fishing is accessible along most of Jefferson Creek, feeding into Jefferson Lake. Access to Michigan Creek is along County Roads 35 and 54. 2-miles of small streams, channels, and deep pools with brown trout. From County Road 33 to Forest Road 801 is the fishable stretch of North Tarryall Creek; fish in small stream and beaver ponds with abundant Brook trout. Tomahawk Ranch State Wildlife Area - Start at Colorado 9 Bridge, about 5 miles north of Hartsel, and fish downstream to where the Middle Fork meets with the South Fork of the South Platte River. There is no boating along the river and you must only use artificial flies & lures. Badger Basin State Wildlife Area - Fish along the South Fork of the South Platte River through Hartsel and along the Middle Fork of the South Platte River for rainbow and brown trout. There is no boating on the river and you must only use artificial flies & lures. Rough & Tumbling Creek - Located southwest of Fairplay along the Upper South Fork of the South Platte River, you'll have fun fishing for brook and native cutthroat trout. There is no boating along this creek and there is only about 1.5 miles of public fishing access. The roads to get to this area are not made for standard vehicles; you'll want to drive an ATV or 4-wheel drive vehicle. Montgomery Reservoir - An 80-acre lake sitting about 11 miles north of Fairplay has some excellent high alpine fishing. There is no boating allowed on the reservoir, only fish from the shoreline. Ice fishing is allowed December 1 through May 31. Fairplay Beach - Less than a minute from downtown Main St in Fairplay is Fairplay Beach. There is no boating here and ironically no swimming either but plenty of fishing. Fairplay is known as the "Fishing Capital of Colorado" because anglers are hooked on this area. Weston Pass - Known as the headwaters of the South Fork of the South Platte River, this area has a small stream and beaver ponds full brook trout. Located several miles southwest of Fairplay along CR 22. Note: This area is for the backcountry angler. You'll want to wear waders or at least shoes that are tied tight since it can be really muddy. Antero Reservoir - Located about 24-miles south of Fairplay, this reservoir has a wide variety of fish to catch. Motorized boats are allowed on the reservoir. You can also ice fish in the winter months. Spinney Mountain State Wildlife Area - Starting at the confluence of the Middle & South Forks of the Platte River and continuing downstream to Spinney Mountain Reservoir, this area has high-quality fishing; this also means restrictive regulations on how much you can bag and the style of fishing. There is boating allowed on the reservoir but keep in mind it can get pretty hazardous if the wind picks up. Ice fishing is not allowed on the reservoir; the park is closed from mid-November to mid-April. Note: a state park pass is required to fish here.

Reopening on May 15, 2022 The museum is an accurate representation of a mining town between 1860 and 1900. Forty-four authentic buildings filled with over 60,000 artifacts portray most of the economic and social aspects of boomtown life. Seven of the buildings are on their original sites; the others have been moved from abandoned camps and ghost towns in South Park, a 900 square mile basin surrounded by Colorado's majestic Rocky Mountains. The restored buildings contain period room settings and exhibits illustrating the professions, trades and industries that contributed to life in a nineteenth century Colorado mining town.

Don't Miss These 'Hole in the Wall' Food Faves

Our favorite local hole-in-the-wall spots are South Park Saloon in Alma, Park Bar in Fairplay, Saloon in Fairplay and the Distillery in Fairplay. Wondering what to wear out in Alma or Fairplay? Keep it very casual. These places are after-work spots for many locals.

Getting around while in the mountains is tricky - I recommend you download Google Maps before you arrive and plan to use that mapping service. Apple Maps and Waze do not work accurately here.

Traveling in Winter? Rent All Wheel / 4 Wheel Drive Vehicle

If you plan to drive through Hoosier Pass (the road between Alma and Breckenridge) we recommend you get a 4 wheel or all wheel drive vehicle. Snow tires are even better. Chains are effective as well. It can be quite dangerous to drive through the pass if it's snowy or icy so be careful. And please don't drink and drive.

How Do I Pack for the Weather?

Dec - Feb Bring super super warm clothes, lots of moisturizer and sunscreen. It can get extremely, bone chillingly cold in our area (spoken like a true Texan, eh?) March - April It's lovely in Alma - 35 degree F during the day and 15 at night. Cold, but sunny and snowy. May - June Pack those waterproof boots because the snow is melting and this is our muddy season! The weather should be superb but getting around might be a little...messy. Mid-June - September It's around 65 in the day so plan on bring a light sweater wherever you go and make sure you bring your sunscreen.
