This is a popular breakfast/brunch place in the Schanzenviertel. This is more about the scene and being in the middle of it all. Not for a quiet gourmet experience. Enjoy the breakfast for 2 which comes with a glass of fizzy. What better way to start a Saturday....

The Backwahn is a local institution! Slightly alternative with good breakfast and lunch. Frequented by young and old, students and everybody else. It's a testament to them that they've been around for a good 30 years now and I have been a loyal customer

Located in an old public toilet building. Sounds bad but is actually a really nice location right by the canal. They are famous for their variety of Flammkuchen, admittedly not a Hamburg speciality, but they are yummy nonetheless. It's lovely to sit outside in summer.

The Reeperbahn started life as a red light district and still works that way today. But it also hosts a million bars and night clubs and fortunatly the seedier sides of the red light district are tucked away. There are a couple of Irish Pubs along the Reeperbahn which are always busy and fun. Go and have a look for yourself. It's like Las Vegas or Marmite: You either love it or hate it.

Legendary Live Music venue where lesser known bands are playing. It's a bit small with its low ceiling but that usually guarantees a great atmosphere and you are close to the acts. Check out the program though very often you can still buy tickets on the night.

It sounds like something for kids only, but a visit at the Miniatur Wunderland is for everyone!!! It's really amazing what they've achieved there. Try to beat the queues and go there early or book an advance ticket. You should set at least 2 hours aside for this but you can easily spend hours and hours.

Parks & Nature

This is a large, public (free entrance) park that runs through the inner city. It started as Hamburg contribution to the bi-annual national flower exposition and has been extended over the years. There are entrances all along the park and you won't notice that you are in the middle of a large city once you are a few steps in. There's a light show with fountains in the summer. Check out the timetable on their website. Kind of old fashioned but sweet nonetheless. In winter you can go to the open air ice rink and swish around to the sound of the DJ or watch the local kids show off while drinking a hot Glühwein/mulled wine or hot chocolate. Closest entrance: at TV tower/Fernsehturm

There's a wide walking and cycling path all around the Alster. Which looks like a lake, or rather two, but is actually a river that is dammed to create that illusion. This is where the Hamburger goes at the weekend to have a stroll with family followed by cake either at home or along one of the cafes (Alstercliff, Alsterperle, Bobby Reich's cafe, Cafe Alex). In very cold winters (hasn't happened for some time) it freezes over and you can skate on the Alster. In summer you can rent sailing boats (you'll need a licence) or rent a pedalo or SUP board (you'll need to leave a deposit and id card).

All along the river Elbe is a path that you can walk. Ideally you'll take one of the little ferries from St. Pauli Landungsbrücken to Ovelgoenne and from there walk down the beach. There's also a paved way just a few meters up from the beach which leads you further down. In summer this is the place to have a beer at the Strandperle bar and sit in the sand while watching large ships float by.
