Sightseeing
Melrose Abbey is located approximately 10 minutes walk from the cottage. It is a partly ruined monastery of the Cistercian order in Melrose, Roxburghshire, in the Scottish Borders. It was founded in 1136 by Cistercian monks at the request of King David I of Scotland and was the chief house of that order in the country until the Reformation.

Train station can be found in Tweedbank just outside of Melrose. You can travel to Edinburgh from here for around £13 return which gets you into Edinburgh Waverley in 50 minutes.

Floors Castle in Kelso approximately 20 minutes drive from Melrose. Worth a visit for a walk around the grounds / castle. It also hosts a play park and cafe / restaurant.

This circular walk climbs to a series of wonderful viewpoints above Melrose. The Eildon Hills consist of three peaks of about 400 metres with wonderful views to Melrose Abbey, Leaderfoot Viaduct and the surrounding countryside of the Borders.

It has an extensive lunch and dinner menu which changes frequently with the seasonality of the local produce.
Nice bar / restaurant in the centre of Melrose with a good sized beer garden to the rear. This place is child / dog friendly.
