Dogs are encouraged at this massive new restaurant/bar/lounge with an expansive outdoor patio centered around welcoming both humans and their four-legged friends (dog menu included). The tropical-meets-midcentury space is filled with velvet banquettes, neon signs, plenty of greenery, and a wall dedicated to the owners’ pups. The Asian-influenced menu features some standout crudo including a Tasmanian ocean trout and a Japanese yellowtail with charred tangelo along with sharable plates and a smattering of entrees like the Miso sea bass fish and chips. The cocktail program is extensive and features frozen and tap offerings as well. During the day, the lounge flips to an espresso bar and co-working space.

After the debacle that was Draughtsman shuttered last year, restaurateurs Chad Gardner (Roly Chinese Fusion, 533 Viet Fusion) and Willie Rhine (Eight4Nine) have banded together to flip the airy standalone space near the Arrive Hotel into a neighborhood gastropub with roll-up glass doors and plenty of wraparound patio space. The all-day menu features both bar fare like sweet-and-spicy wings, onion rings, and burgers along with salads and entrees. There’s also a serious gin cocktail menu plus lots of craft beers

The duo behind this smashburger spot offering first gained a faithful following at Palm Springs’ Thursday night street fair VillageFest, later shifting to pop-up form. Now they’ve settled into a permanent space inside the Hilton hotel, where they sell their Harris Ranch beef cheeseburgers, fried chicken sandwiches, and mushroom burgers on potato buns as well as loaded fries and an impressive house salad.

For morning coffee for the grown-ups and hot chocolate for the kids, Koffi (515 N. Palm Canyon Dr.) is a great spot to start the day. We love it because the back opens on to a courtyard landscaped with green lawn, palm trees and lots of places to sit and enjoy the scenery. The kids can run around while the parents sit and chat or read the news. It’s perfect for a lazy weekend morning, complete with its in-house roasted coffees, fruit smoothies and sticky homemade cinnamon rolls.

Our favorite place for breakfast if we can get the kids out of bed early is Cheeky’s (622 N. Palm Canyon Dr.), a fantastic breakfast café. The restaurant only serves breakfast, and it does it so well that sometimes the wait is up to an hour. We like to go early before the crowds, and enjoy the pineapple French toast, chilaquiles and sweet corn muffins at our leisure. If you go, try the bacon flight: a series of several slices of bacon, each with interesting flavors such as maple syrup, chipotle, coffee and more.

For lunch, we often end up at Blaze Pizza downtown (201 N. Palm Canyon Dr.). A relative newcomer in a newly constructed building, Blaze is a chain where you can basically make your own pizza. Each guest gets to choose their toppings on an individual-sized pizza, which means everybody is happy with their own slices. Our kids tend to play it safe with pepperoni and cheese or maybe even just cheese. For the more adventurous, you can spice it up with barbecue sauce, jalapeños, pineapple and a whole host of meat and veggie options.
