Places to Visit - Hay-on-Wye

City/town information

Hay-on-Wye is one of my favourite places to visit. Quirky shops, beautiful scenery and friendly locals. With over twenty bookshops, it is often described as "the town of books", and is the site of the annual Hay Festival. It has live music venues, galleries & lots of yummy places to eat. Perfect for a day out and about a 15 minute drive from Smithy Cottage.

Shopping

One of my favourite shops in the whole world, this fair trade shop has an amazing variety of stylish products made by inspiring people. Clothes, Chocolate, Toys, Jewellery just to mention a few, each product is hand picked by the owners. Coming from all corners of the earth, promoting & supporting artisan makers who are treated and paid fairly. Modern shopping with an eye on the world. Worth a look for gifts or just treating yourself.

A beautifully-curated shop of new and vintage pieces from far and wide, and a showcase for local artisan makers. They have a little bookshop and a vegetarian cafe. Great place for lunch with yummy cakes, made daily in-house.

Food scene

One of our favourite places to eat. The food is made from the best ingredients sourced locally from the wonderful profusion of growers and makers on the Welsh borders, from artisan bread to the best seasonal veg. Great wines and beers served or just go in for some coffee & pudding. There's a huge chalkboard of specials to choose from. We always seem to order most of the Tapas menu when we visit as its all so tasty, if you're a meat eater the Chorizo in cider is amazing!!

An historic 17th Century Inn, it is situated close to what was known as the Lion Gate, one of the original entrances into the medieval walled town of Hay-on-Wye. It is believed that parts of the building date back to the 1300’s. The Old Black Lion certainly has a colourful history and it is reputed that Oliver Cromwell stayed at the Inn whilst the Roundheads besieged Hay Castle. This pub is always a great visit, we have had many a tasty meal here. It is also dog friendly in the bar room which has a lovely fire.

A sit in or takeaway Indian restaurant, family favourite of ours with a great variety on the menu. Nobody delivers takeaway to us being a fair drive from anywhere so your best choices are in Hay-on-Wye with just a 15 mins drive home.

Culture

Rated by Culture Trip as one of the best galleries to visit in Wales. A beautiful space filled with stunning paintings and sculpture, large and small, always worth a look. I love that they are trying to make art more affordable for everyone by hosting a scheme called Collectors Plan. This enables people to purchase works by paying monthly. There's always a warm welcome and well behaved dogs are allowed in too.

Until the 1960s Hay-On-Wye was a sleepy market town. Then along came Richard Booth who opened this world famous bookshop and others quickly followed until Hay became known as The Town of Books. This bookshop is a delight to visit & has a lovely restaurant. They also have a really funky cinema round the corner showing a variety of up-to-date releases, a great night out but with a small capacity tickets book up quickly.

Addyman Books have 3 bookshops in Hay. On Lion Street you will find the original Addyman Books & on Castle street you will find The Addyman Annexe. Between the two they cover every conceivable genre. Murder and Mayhem is also on Lion street opposite the original shop specialising in detective fiction, packed to the roof with every crime author you have heard of, and many more you haven't!
